Engineering Technologist 1/2 (BIM Coordinator)
Los Alamos National Laboratory is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in strategic science on behalf of national security. They are seeking an Engineering Technologist to support the transition from 2D computer-aided design to 3D Building Information Modeling, assisting with the creation and management of BIM models, documentation, and project workflows.

Responsibilities
Assist in creating, organizing, and maintaining multidisciplinary BIM models using Revit, AutoCAD, and related tools
Support model updates, documentation output, and basic clash identification under supervision
Assist with 2D to 3D transitions and application of BIM standards, templates, and execution workflows
Participate in the collection, organization, and management of project data and metadata needed for operations and maintenance integration
Support LiDAR scan collection efforts and basic processing tasks
Help develop and maintain digital construction content such as Revit families, templates, and detail components
Assist with virtual build environment (VBE) service requests and communicate with the VBE Office and other Lab stakeholders as needed
Participate in pilot testing new BIM tools, documenting observations, and assisting with small scale process improvements
Apply established engineering principles to routine technical problems, prepare basic calculations or documentation, and support design change workflows
Coordinate multidisciplinary BIM models and conduct clash detection evaluations with limited supervision
Contribute to the development, refinement, and enforcement of BIM standards, templates, and workflow processes
Assist in preparing and reviewing BIM Execution Plans for Integrated Project Teams
Support the creation and management of digital assets used across design, fabrication, construction, and operations
Participate directly in BIM related problem solving, helping resolve design discrepancies through model-based coordination
Aid in data mining, visualization, and integration activities supporting digital twin and lifecycle management efforts
Support validation and auditing of BIM practices, contribute to corrective action recommendations, and help evaluate their effectiveness
Train and guide less experienced BIM users in basic modeling methods, data entry, and adherence to standards
Assist in researching, evaluating, and implementing emerging BIM technologies to improve efficiency and model intelligence
Apply engineering concepts and sound judgment to support design reviews, technical documentation, calculations, and project coordination
Qualification
Required
Knowledge of Autodesk Revit, AutoCAD, Vault, Autodesk Construction Cloud, and related CAD/BIM tools
Ability to support multidisciplinary model coordination and perform basic clash detection
Understanding of integrated design, construction, and operational practices, including architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems
General understanding of building lifecycle concepts and how BIM data supports operations and maintenance
Experience supporting the creation of construction documents and digital assets
Familiarity with LiDAR technology and its integration in BIM applications
Ability to apply mathematical formulas, engineering computations, and data gathering methods
Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams of architects, engineers, designers, and operations personnel
Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to contribute to open communication, mutual trust, and productive team dynamics
Ability to coach or mentor others at a basic level (ET-2 expected to demonstrate stronger capability)
Commitment to learning new tools, workflows, and responsibilities while supporting Lab-wide BIM adoption
Demonstrated self-awareness, accountability, and willingness to contribute to a constructive and collaborative work environment
Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or a Technical field and 2 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. Requires 1-2 years specifically as a BIM modeler, coordinator, or specialist

Preferred
Knowledge of DOE standards applicable to facility design, operation, and maintenance
Autodesk Revit Certified Professional; PMP or similar credentials a plus
Experience with Navisworks, Civil 3D, Creo, or other discipline-specific modeling tools
Experience working with GD&T or manufacturing-related digital processes
Familiarity with engineering documentation control, project controls, or change management processes
Demonstrated interest in process improvement, innovation, and continuous learning
