Molecular Ecology Research Assistant
UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (UKCEH) is seeking a Molecular Ecology Research Assistant to contribute to scientific discovery and generate essential data for addressing environmental challenges. The role involves providing laboratory and field support for molecular and microbiology research projects, focusing on the application of genomics in studying biological communities in various ecosystems.

Responsibilities
Preparation of sampling equipment
Culturing of microbes from environmental samples and isolates
Laboratory sample processing including but not limited to sample weighing, DNA extraction and assisting with qPCR and metagenomic sequencing preparation
Disseminating information and results (supporting report writing for stakeholders/funders and academic publications)
Supporting project leads with stakeholder engagement
Assisting with fieldwork in both aquatic and terrestrial environments
Qualification
Required
A BSc (2:1 or above), an MSc or equivalent in microbiology, environmental sciences, molecular biology or similar
Laboratory experience, with an organised, methodical approach, and understands sample management and a good awareness of lab health and safety practices
Experience in microbiology techniques, such as aseptic transfers, media (broth and agar) preparation and microbial culturing
Excellent interpersonal and time management skills, with the ability to adapt to changing priorities and ensure an inclusive communication approach
An interest or experience in relevant topics such as antimicrobial resistance, microbiology, environmental research and environmental pollution
Preferred
Experience in molecular laboratory techniques (e.g., DNA extraction and quantitative PCR)
Is comfortable working in the field and with a range of samples – including wading in rivers and working with wastewater
Has a full UK driving licence – please confirm in your CV
