Laboratory Equipment Designer (Electronics)
The NYS Department of Environmental Conservation is seeking a Laboratory Equipment Designer (Electronics) to support air monitoring operations. The role involves designing, troubleshooting, and maintaining air monitoring equipment as well as collaborating with research staff to ensure accurate data collection.

Responsibilities
Design, construct, troubleshoot and repair air monitoring equipment to support New York State’s air monitoring network
Take necessary steps to design and ensure the reliable operation of equipment installed at monitoring sites, including the performance and documentation of quality assurance and quality control checks on all air quality monitoring equipment at monitoring sites
Maintain, repair, and oversee air monitoring operations at air quality monitoring stations in central, northern, and western New York including the calibration, maintenance and repair of intricate electrical and electronic instruments used by research and engineering staff including microprocessors based on telemetry, ambient air monitoring instrumentation, records, etc
Installation of sampling equipment and collection of air samples for continuous and manual air monitoring, including special studies
Evaluate air monitoring data from monitors and special air studies confirming data availability and accuracy to ensure the proper operation of equipment
Work with research and engineering staff to develop and operate air monitoring systems and solve complex problems associated with them
Evaluate and test various types of air sampling equipment for application and use in special studies or improving existing operations
Assist in the design, implementation, and operation of activities associated with special air monitoring projects, documenting and recording all activities, observations and test results for future reference
Provide physical and technical assistance to field technicians
Qualification
Required
High school diploma and two years of experience in the design, repair, maintenance, operation, and calibration of sophisticated electrical and electronics equipment for scientific research or experiments for educational purposes
Must have a valid driver's license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position
Must be capable of handling the standard tools of electricians and have an understanding of electrical systems to be able to troubleshoot these systems at monitoring sites
Must have experience with electrical communication systems to be able to install, troubleshoot and repair systems at monitoring sites
Must be capable of handling standard construction tools
Must be able to drive a truck or van and capable of loading and unloading vehicles
Must be able to operate a computer and possess knowledge of required technical computer programs
Must be able to write correspondence and reports
Must be able to lift and carry heavy equipment and climb ladders
Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain
Must be able to work in remote areas
Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions
Travel may be required
Overtime may be required
Overnight travel may be required
Must be able to lift and move objects up to 50 pounds
Preferred
An associate's degree with specialization in machine design may substitute for the two years of experience
