Civil Engineer I - Maintenance Engineering
The Commonwealth of Massachusetts is responsible for developing and maintaining transportation systems. Government Administration
Responsibilities
Receives calls/complaints from citizens related to drainage, sidewalk, and pavement concerns, investigates the problem and designs repairs. Forwards work requests to appropriate unit/staff for completion. Tracks requests and follows through to ensure work is completed
Designs maintenance projects to PS&E stage, including limited access highway and secondary roadway resurfacing projects, various locations roadway repair contracts, drainage and erosion repair contracts, tree removal and trimming contracts, and sidewalk repair and upgrade contracts
Prepares civil engineering designs in accordance with sound engineering principles, regulations, and technical specifications
Prepares cost estimates for proposed maintenance projects using information from project records and other resources
Performs calculations by using computers and calculators to solve engineering problems and/or check computations made by others
Assists in researching property and drainage issues, and in obtaining and providing existing drainage plans and other available records to designers requesting information
Reviews plans and documents related to permit applications for impacts to the State Highway Layout and conflicts with planned work activities
Supervises and inspects Maintenance projects for compliance with engineering principles, standards, contract language and engineering plans
Performs other related duties as required
Qualification
Required
At least two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, technical or professional experience in civil engineering work in such areas as construction, survey, design, transportation, hydraulics, structural, sanitary, drafting, environmental, highway, architectural, airport, soils and materials
Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class D Motor Vehicle Operator's License may be required
Preferred
Proficiency in various civil engineering software (AutoCAD, GIS, excel, etc)
Ability to work/interact in a diverse workforce
Strong math skills
Excellent grasp of engineering fundamentals
