Chief Development Officer
The Children’s Bereavement Center of South Texas (CBCST) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting children and families grieving the loss of a loved one. The Chief Development Officer (CDO) will provide strategic leadership for philanthropic, communications, and community engagement activities, overseeing revenue-generating functions and ensuring alignment with the organization’s mission and objectives.

Responsibilities
Foster a culture of philanthropy and ensure that fund development and communications activities reflect the organization's mission, vision, values, and strategic direction
Lead mentor and evaluate the development, communications, and community engagement teams
Create annual departmental budgets and multi-year strategic development and communication plans
Establish performance measures, monitor outcomes, and evaluate the overall effectiveness of development and marketing programs
Build and maintain a positive environment grounded in trust, collaboration, and open communication
Develop and implement a comprehensive fundraising strategy to diversify and grow the organization’s revenue across major donors, foundation and corporate grants, annual giving, planned giving, and government contracts
Manage a portfolio of major donors and prospects, applying a structured moves-management approach
Lead all aspects of grant strategy, including oversight of proposal development, submission, and reporting
Oversee all special events and sponsorship strategies, ensuring they align with revenue goals and brand standards
Partner with the CEO and CBCST Foundation Board on planned giving initiatives and donor stewardship strategies
Provide accurate revenue forecasting, pipeline management, and risk assessments in collaboration with the CFO
Design and oversee donor cultivation and stewardship programs, ensuring timely and meaningful donor communication
Ensure use of data analytics and CRM tools (e.g., Salesforce) to strengthen donor segmentation, prospect research, campaign performance analysis, and reporting
Uphold the highest ethical fundraising standards, including adherence to gift acceptance policies, donor confidentiality, and compliant solicitation practices
Oversee all internal and external communications, including website content, digital strategies, print materials, media relations, and public relations efforts
Ensure brand consistency across all platforms and organizational materials
Coordinate with the CEO on crisis or sensitive communication needs
Guide storytelling to ensure accuracy, cultural responsiveness, and ethical representation of children and families served
Collaborate with the CFO and Finance team on reconciliation, revenue reporting, gift processing, and accuracy of donor records
Oversee preparation of development reports for the CEO, Executive Management Team, and Board of Directors
Ensure compliance with all government funding requirements, contract obligations, grant reporting, and philanthropic regulations
Guide storytelling to ensure accuracy, cultural responsiveness, and ethical representation of children and families served
Maintain and update the annual fundraising and communications calendar
Serve as staff liaison to the Fundraising/Marketing and Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Board Committees; support additional Board committees as needed
Provide coaching, tools, and support to Board members to strengthen their engagement in fundraising and community ambassadorship
Serve as a spokesperson for the organization with the public, donors, partners, and media as appropriate
Build strong relationships with community leaders, philanthropic partners, and key stakeholders
Qualification
Required
Bachelor's degree in business, marketing, communications, nonprofit management, public relations, or related field
Minimum of seven years of progressively responsible fundraising experience in the nonprofit sector
Demonstrated success securing major gifts and managing a comprehensive development program
Experience leading and mentoring teams, managing consultants, and supporting fundraising activities of senior leaders and Board members
Strong organizational, analytical, and project management skills
Proficiency with CRM systems (Salesforce preferred), financial reporting tools, and productivity software (e.g., Office 365)
Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
