Sr Life Underwriter - Underwriting Innovation & Governance

The Sr. Life Underwriter will be a key technical expert, responsible for modernizing underwriting practices and improving efficiency while managing complex cases and collaborating across teams.
Responsibilities
Provide expert underwriting advice and guidance to underwriters and other stakeholders
Lead the underwriting audit function in collaboration with reinsurance partners
Participate in claims investigations and forensic underwriting practices
Stay current with industry trends, medical advancements, and regulatory changes affecting life underwriting
Evaluate and assess life insurance applications using comprehensive medical, financial, and personal information
Clearly communicate underwriting decisions and rationale to agents, brokers, and other stakeholders
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to gather necessary information and ensure seamless application processing
Facilitate discussions with clients and intermediaries to explain underwriting decisions and address concerns
Act as a strategic thought partner with product, data science, AI and automation, and operations teams to co-create solutions that improve underwriting accuracy and efficiency
Independently manage a portfolio of complex cases, while also proactively identifying ways to improve speed, ease, and accuracy of decision-making through process enhancements or tech integration
Prioritize tasks effectively and execute underwriting processes with precision and accuracy
Take ownership of challenging cases, demonstrating the ability to make sound decisions autonomously
Ensure all underwriting practices comply with regulatory requirements and company policies
Identify opportunities for process improvements and contribute to the development of best practices
Participate in ongoing training and professional development to enhance underwriting skills and knowledge
Regularly benchmark internal practices against industry-leading standards to ensure we remain at the forefront of underwriting innovation
Help champion a culture of experimentation – test new tools, vendors and workflows to discover high-impact improvements
Analyze referral data to uncover areas for improvement in logic that can increase straight-thru processing
Partner with tech teams to update rule sets for modifications, track implementation of those updates, and monitor their impact
Perform comprehensive analysis of vendor data to ensure scoring algorithms are robust and delivering the expected results
Collaborate with vendor partners to address discrepancies when performance deviates from expectations
Translate innovation opportunities into detailed business requirements to support scalable tech and process enhancements
Actively contribute to the design of the future underwriting experience—balancing rigorous risk assessment with speed, simplicity, and seamless consumer experience
Partner with teams on experimentation with new tools, data sources (e.g., electronic health records, wearables), and digital interaction models to enhance underwriting accuracy and efficiency
Participate in vendor evaluation, onboarding, and performance monitoring for automation, AI, and data partners
Serve as internal champion for modern, digital-first underwriting – advocating for scalable, consumer-centric and tech-enabled best practices
Act as a consultant and mentor to junior underwriters, sharing expertise, providing guidance and helping to integrate new tools, guidelines and systems into daily workflows
Lead or participate in special projects and initiatives aimed at improving underwriting efficiency and effectiveness
Contribute to the development and refinement of underwriting guidelines and procedures
Lead underwriting vendor portfolio as the relationship liaison
Qualification
Required
8+ years of experience life underwriting experience with at least $2M death benefit approval authority, preferably in a fast-paced or growth-stage environment
Deep knowledge of underwriting principles, practices, and guidelines
Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build relationships and collaborate effectively
Proven ability to work autonomously, manage multiple priorities, and execute tasks efficiently
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with keen attention to detail
Passion for technology, automation, and innovation
Strategic thinker with an ability to zoom in and out— willing to roll up your sleeves while influencing at the executive level
Clear, confident communicator who thrives in a cross-functional, remote-first, agile environment
Preferred
Professional designations (e.g., FALU, FLMI) are highly desirable
