Responsibilities

Analyzes, researches and develops structural engineering specifications involving metals, non-metallic or composite structural materials for product design, or operation of product to include structures, mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and electronics, power plant, armament, heating and ventilating, equipment and maintenance designs
Analyzes damage tolerance, durability, design allowables and structural modeling
Perform dynamic structural (shock) analyses utilizing finite element analysis (FEA) methods with the pre-/post-processor (FEMAP and NASTRAN, Abaqus, Hypermesh, Government codes) computer applications, perform hand calculations using textbook methods, and develop engineering calculation reports, check structural analyses reports
Working in an environment where technical growth opportunities abound, leading to exciting opportunities to grow in dynamic and transient analysis methods, underwater explosion analysis and related projects
Lead various projects of growing scope depending on performance
Provide technical oversight and training to junior engineers

Required

Bachelor's Degree and 5 years of relevant exempt experience
Master's Degree and 3 years of relevant professional experience
Ph.D. and 0 years of experience
Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program

Preferred

Detailed knowledge of structural response and design requirements for surface ship or submarines
Detailed knowledge and experience with Finite Element Analysis software (Femap, Hypermesh, or Abaqus) and related first-principles methods
Ability to learn new programs and old, i.e FORTRAN, Matlab, python, etc
Ability to move forward on projects when path isn't clear through consultation with senior engineers
Experience in project management with an ability to plan and execute tasks to meet program objectives
Ability to communicate with internal and external customers in a professional manner
Skilled at technical writing and reporting
Experience with high performance computing systems and nonlinear advanced analysis methods
