Student Intern (Summer 2026)

NEOGOV is seeking a part-time Student Intern for the United States Probation Office in the Eastern District of North Carolina. The intern will assist probation officers with various administrative and investigative duties, including running criminal history checks, preparing reports, and observing court hearings.

Responsibilities

Assists officers with running criminal history checks through local and national databases and files, as well conducting inquiries with collateral agencies. Investigates a defendant's employment, sources of income, etc. Conducts database searches, compiles information, and enters data/information in the office's database systems
Assists with preparing and processing reports, forms, and documents, ensuring consistency and accuracy among forms, reports and other paperwork. Proofreads and edits documents for accuracy, proper grammar, and spelling for signature by the officer or supervisor
Observes court hearings and officer meetings with defendants and/or persons under supervision
Assists with administrative duties such as scanning, shredding, copying, and greeting visitors in person and/or on the telephone
Performs other duties as assigned

Required

High school diploma or equivalent
Currently enrolled as a part-time or full-time student pursuing an undergraduate degree in social work, criminal justice, criminology, psychology, sociology, human relations, pre-law, political science, English, or related field of study
Proof of enrollment must be provided
At least a 2.9 cumulative grade point average (GPA)
Ability to commit to 12-16 hours per week in 4-hour blocks of time between the hours of 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday
Excellent organizational and communication skills
Ability to meet tight deadlines
Word processing and scanning/file imaging proficiency
Ability to work harmoniously with others in a team-oriented environment
Thorough knowledge of spelling, punctuation, grammatical usage
Exceptional customer service skills
Strong attention to detail
Ability to maintain confidentiality
Integrity, good judgment, initiative, and the ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds
Professional manner, including respecting confidentiality, being punctual, maintaining a professional appearance, and maintaining a professional relationship with clients and staff
United States citizenship or lawful permanent residency actively seeking citizenship
Submit to a background investigation (including references, criminal history, and credit history) prior to an offer of employment
Submit fingerprints for an FBI background check

Preferred

Preference will be given to upperclassman and/or individuals whose schedule allows them to commit to larger blocks of time
