Responsibilities

Conduct comprehensive financial due diligence on prospective portfolio companies, including pre-revenue and growth-stage ventures
Analyze financial projections, cash flow, burn rate, revenue models, and capital needs
Assess business models, unit economics, risks, and opportunities
Prepare investment analyses and recommendations for committee review
Evaluate acquisition, merger, or secondary investment opportunities
Develop standardized due diligence frameworks for consistency and rigor
Maintain ongoing visibility into portfolio company financial performance
Monitor burn rate, cash runway, funding milestones, and covenant compliance
Identify early warning signs of financial distress or growth opportunity
Provide financial guidance to company leadership on forecasting, capital planning, and operational efficiency
Help companies understand and benchmark key financial metrics
Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual internal financial forecasts and portfolio reports
Develop variance analyses, trend reports, and risk assessments
Support board reporting and internal financial planning
Improve portfolio company reporting quality through templates, expectations, and reviews
Verify spending for grants and contracts and ensure financial compliance
Maintain an organized, auditable database of portfolio company financials
Prepare and monitor project and grant budgets
Track program expenditures and maintain accurate financial records
Support accounts payable/receivable functions as needed
Support the annual audit process with necessary documentation
Attend staff and board meetings to provide financial insight
Maintain strict confidentiality of sensitive company information
Support periodic forecasting, budgeting, and financial planning for Ben Franklin/CNP operations
Prepare specialized financial reports and board presentations
Assist with regulatory reporting
Participate in strategic projects related to financial operations, cost improvements, or portfolio support
Provide financial training for administrative staff and ensure compliance with university policies

Required

Experience evaluating early-stage ventures
Experience forecasting growth-stage cash flows
Ability to translate complex data into actionable insights

Ability to build and interpret advanced financial models
Strong understanding of GAAP, financial statements, cash flow, and valuation methodologies
Strong analytical and strategic thinking skills
Ability to assess business models, markets, and competitive dynamics
Experience assessing financial risk, identifying red flags, and evaluating capital requirements—especially for early-stage companies
Ability to translate complex financial data into clear, actionable recommendations for founders, Portfolio Managers, and board members
Ability to work across a diverse team and influence decisions through analysis and insight
Ability to manage multiple complex projects independently with strong prioritization skills
Expert proficiency with Microsoft Office
Strong integrity and commitment to protecting sensitive information
Bachelor's degree
8+ years relevant experience (or equivalent combination) for Principal Professional
6+ years relevant experience (or equivalent combination) for Senior Professional

Preferred

Experience with venture capital, private equity, or early-stage investment environments
Experience supporting manufacturing companies
Familiarity with term sheets, equity structures, and investment-stage financing
