Volunteer Community & Stewardship Manager
Operation BBQ Relief is seeking a Volunteer Community & Stewardship Manager to build and sustain relationships with volunteers through proactive outreach and community-building. This role focuses on improving volunteer retention and experience, serving as a primary point of contact for volunteer care and concerns.

Responsibilities
Integrate all aspects of the OBR way into day-to-day operations, mentoring and developing the department on the OBR Way
Supervise up to 3 personnel as a Manager
Recruit, interview, hire, and train new staff in the department
Oversee the daily workflow of the department
Handle discipline and termination of employees in accordance with company policy
Provide constructive and timely performance evaluations for personnel assigned
Maintain a high-touch outreach cadence for key volunteer cohorts (new, returning, lapsed, CORE, and leadership pipeline), ensuring volunteers feel known, supported, and connected
Provide welcome calls, orientation touchpoints, and problem-solving support that removes friction for new volunteers and increases readiness for first service experiences
Execute re-engagement plans for lapsed volunteers and coordinate pathways back into service opportunities
Facilitate volunteer community through open office, listening sessions, peer connections, and mentor/buddy matching programs in partnership with leadership
Serve as an accessible, trusted point of contact for volunteer questions, concerns, and feedback. De-escalate issues, reinforce expectations, and help volunteers navigate resources and leaders as needed
Capture recurring themes from outreach and volunteer interactions; provide actionable summaries and recommendations to the Head of Programs and relevant leaders
Coordinate timely appreciation touchpoints (thank-you notes, spotlights, milestone acknowledgements) using existing recognition frameworks and leader input
Coordinate with Programs, Disaster, Non-Disaster, and MarComms partners to improve the volunteer experience and ensure volunteer voices are represented in decisions
When deployed or present at events, focus on volunteer welcome, care, connection, and experience support. Escalate operational issues through the appropriate chain of command
Complete administrative tasks including expense submissions, company-assigned training, and document reviews
Qualification
Required
Must live in one of the following states: KS, MO, IN, NJ, VA, PA, TN, GA, AL, FL or TX
Three (3) or more years of experience in volunteer management, member services, community engagement, customer success, hospitality, or a related high-touch service role
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Demonstrated ability to build trust and maintain relationships across diverse volunteer populations
Ability to apply common sense to carry out complex instructions and resolve variables in standardized situations
Comfort facilitating group discussions, office hours, and listening sessions
Working knowledge of web-based systems and spreadsheets; ability to document and track follow-ups
Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating instructions, and procedure manuals; write routine reports and correspondence; and speak effectively to groups
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure; compute rate, ratio, and percent; and interpret basic graphs
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form and to deal with problems involving several concrete variables
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, spreadsheets, internet browsers, web-based programs, and email
Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
May require prolonged periods of standing and walking during events or deployments
Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds at a time
Preferred
Experience in a nonprofit, disaster response, or field-operations environment
Bachelor's Degree preferred or High school diploma with relevant business background or experience preferred
