The Commonwealth of Massachusetts is seeking a Legal Department Intern for its 2026 Treasury Summer Internship Program. This internship will provide law students with exposure to various legal areas, focusing on research and assisting the legal team with projects, legal memoranda, and policy drafting.

Government Administration

Responsibilities

Research statutes, regulations, and case authority relating to a variety of issues; draft legal memoranda as required

Provide written or oral responses to legal inquiries from Treasury departments

Assist with drafting policies, regulations, and administrative law pleadings

Attend various internal and external meetings with Treasury legal staff

Assist with administrative tasks related to legal team operations

Other tasks as requested

Required

Candidates selected for an interview will be asked to provide a writing sample (legal) and letter of recommendation

Cover letter (REQUIRED)

Preferred

Interest and/or coursework in employment law, contracts, constitutional law, trusts & estates, administrative law, and laws pertaining to state employees and public bodies is strongly preferred, but not necessary

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

Strong organizational and planning skills

Excellent research skills, including adeptness with Westlaw

Ability to write clearly and persuasively

Demonstrated interest in governmental and/or public interest work

Working knowledge of MS Office Software, especially Excel and Word

Ability to prioritize and manage multiple assignments at once
