Environmental GIS Specialist

Responsibilities

Manage the development and execution of WRAPS watershed projects
Foster a working relationship with and assist watershed coordinators with the development of project strategies, objectives, timelines and deliverables
Monitor progress on project implementation plan (PIP) strategies, deliverables, and adherence to project timelines on a quarterly basis
Work with coordinators to implement corrective actions to ensure projects accomplish WRAPS project objectives
Coordinate with the WRAPS Grant Administrator to review proposed deviations from approved PIPs or to resolve known issues of compliance
Engage with watershed stakeholder leadership team (SLT) as necessary (at least once per year) to provide agency updates, present environmental data or results, and ask questions as necessary
Conduct spot field audits of BMPs to verify environmental results
Ensure data derived from assigned WRAPS watershed projects, i.e., best management practices (BMPs) and metadata (e.g. BMP type, location, cost share amount) are verified as accurate through appropriate quality assurance procedures
Specializes in using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to support the technical needs of programs within the Watershed Management Section (WMS)
Support includes developing and maintaining spatial datasets, performing geospatial data analyses, interpreting spatial data and analytical results related to watershed hydrology, land use, soils, climate, water quality and environmental impacts
Organize and maintain GIS databases, ensuring data accuracy, integrity, and accessibility
Provide GIS training and assistance to other WMS staff and staff from other bureaus
Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to integrate GIS analyses into environmental assessments and plans
Stay current with emerging GIS technologies, tools, and best practices relevant to watershed management
Support public outreach efforts by preparing materials that communicate GIS findings and watershed issues to community members and stakeholders

Required

High School, GED
Valid Driver's License - Incumbent is required to have and maintain a valid driver's license when operating a state vehicle, a private vehicle, or a rental vehicle for the benefit of the State
4 years' experience and knowledge in agriculture or environmental science with an emphasis in biology, chemistry, agronomy, animal science or a related natural science

Demonstrated leadership and teamwork skills
Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing
Knowledge of the strategies for water pollution control and measurement
Knowledge of water pollution biology, chemistry, and bacteriology of water and wastewater
Knowledge of the principles of natural science related to environmental control or natural resources
Experience with environmental regulations and statutes
Knowledge of principles of watershed management, water quality, non-point source pollution
Experience in Agriculture
Ability to interpret federal, state, and local environmental or conservation laws and regulations
4 years' experience and knowledge in environmental, agricultural, biological science
