Responsibilities

Coordinates the development of the music program and music curricula, authentic performance assessments, and instructional materials designed for all grade levels (PK-12); serves on or chairs special study committees and committees to review, modify, develop and/or evaluate music programs and materials of instruction
Engages all stakeholders, including parents, school system personnel, and civic associations in the music education program; maintains liaison with Maryland State Department of Education and other educational agencies, associations, unions, community groups and other organizations to provide and receive appropriate information and services
Designs innovative programs and opportunities for students to explore music technology and music composition software; seeks out and creates opportunities for students to engage in authentic career experiences in modern technologies including music software development and music composition
Ensures that students have multiple authentic performance and participation experiences by planning and conducting county-wide festivals, performing ensembles, clinics, and music camp programs as well as planning and implementing county-wide artist performances such as major symphony orchestra and opera educational programs
Maintains contact with and participates in the activities of appropriate professional organizations and educational agencies
Redesigns the AP Music Theory program to increase participation in the program and to improve student performance on the AP exam
Collaborates with other content area offices, including arts integration, to ensure that students have multiple opportunities in all classrooms to use music as an instructional tool and to build an appreciation of music in all children; works with all content areas to create curricular interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary opportunities for all learners
Collaborates with Advanced Studies and Programs to support and enhance the Performing and Visual Arts Magnet Programs, Enhancing Elementary Excellence (Triple E), International Baccalaureate (IB), STEM, and other magnet and student programs
Visits schools to monitor the music program, observe and evaluate instructional methods, and to meet with staff and to counsel and assist in improving teaching and learning. Serves as second rating observer as requested by school administrator. Cooperates in the design and execution of teacher collaborative plans of support. Counsels music teachers in setting professional goals
Coordinates articulation of curriculum between grade and school levels
Interviews prospective teaching candidates for the purpose of recommending hiring actions to personnel and school administration; interviews for music resource teacher and classified employee placement
Works with the Office of School Performance, Human Resources, Health Physical Education and Dance, Visual Arts, and Media to recommend staffing allocations and school assignments for elementary music programs; articulates guidelines to principals, teachers and other appropriate staff; encourages alternative approaches to ensure that all elementary students have powerful music education experiences
Plans for and provides professional learning opportunities for teachers and administrators in research-based effective practices in music education including digital music and electronic composition; provides music teachers with access to current research and external learning opportunities in the area of music education and meets regularly with music department chairs and lead teachers; counsels teachers and others in their personal professional goals
Collaborates with architects and principals in developing plans for new or modified facilities
Prepares required reports and budget requests; recommends allocation of funds according to need and best utilization; prepares specifications for purchase of material and equipment; prepares requests for State and Federal program approval and funding; maintains files, records, and expenditure controls; actively pursues grants and other external funding opportunities in order to enhance the overall music education program
Ensures that musical instruments and other equipment are properly maintained and repaired in a timely fashion; evaluates and supervises the operation of the piano tuner/technician and the piano shop
Hires, supervises, and evaluates office staff including department administrative assistant, and academic specialists
Oversees the operation of the Henry Rosso Memorial Music Library
Performs other related duties as assigned within the same classification or lower

Required

Master's Degree in related field of education from a regionally accredited college or university required
Five (5) years successful music teaching experience required
Ability to work evenings and weekends to supervise and coordinate various music programs
Knowledge of school organization and administration, with special emphasis on teaching techniques and supervision in the field of Music Education
Knowledge of all musical instruments and materials, music composition, music theory, and related technology applications
Knowledge of current trends and research in music education
Ability to communicate effectively with others
Ability to supervise the work of others
Ability to deal effectively with students, staff, and the public
Demonstrates ability to effectively work and communicate with diverse populations
Hold or be eligible for Supervisor of Instruction, Assistant Principal, and Principal licensure issued by Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) required
Hold or be eligible for Driver's License (DL) Class C Non-Commercial issued by Maryland or State of Legal Residence (MVA/DMV) required
Daily access to reliable transportation

Preferred

Demonstrated proficiency with business technology applications (e.g. Video/Web Conferencing, Microsoft Office Suite -Word, Excel, Outlook, and/or PowerPoint preferred)
