National Legal Aid & Defender Association is seeking a Staff Attorney with significant litigation experience to join their nonprofit law firm. The Staff Attorney will develop and execute complex federal and state impact litigation, supervise litigation teams, and handle individual cases as needed.

Responsibilities

Work with clients, community partners, and NHLA subject matter experts to identify and prioritize civil legal issues impacting large groups of clients

Investigate and analyze civil legal issues for possible litigation

Develop and implement litigation strategies

Lead and co-counsel major cases in state and federal court, including class actions and appeals

Oversee and coordinate litigation teams, including NHLA staff members, aligned public interest law firm staff, and pro bono partners

Train and mentor attorneys and advocates to strengthen NHLA’s litigation capacity; and

Participate as a team member in the Staff Attorney’s assigned office

Required

Significant litigation experience

Ability to develop and execute complex federal and state impact litigation, including class actions and appeals

Experience in supervising and participating in impact work

Ability to handle individual cases as permitted by litigation workload

Willingness to meet with clients in New Hampshire and accompany and/or appear on behalf of clients in court proceedings and at appointments in New Hampshire and Massachusetts

Regular in-state travel

Ability to work collaboratively with clients, community partners, and NHLA subject matter experts

Skills in investigating and analyzing civil legal issues for possible litigation

Experience in developing and implementing litigation strategies

Ability to lead and co-counsel major cases in state and federal court

Experience in overseeing and coordinating litigation teams

Ability to train and mentor attorneys and advocates
