Exhibit Technician I (Full Time)

Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science is seeking an Exhibit Technician I to install and maintain exhibits. The role involves working collaboratively with other technicians and management to ensure the safe operation of exhibits and assist with after-hours events.

Responsibilities

Execute a daily task list for all portions of the museum. These activities include installation, repairs, upkeep of exhibit components, painting, cleaning, and attention to all aspects of the exhibition floor, including lighting
Participate in the exhibit and building projects, including general prototyping, fabrication, and installation
Assist in the installation and breakdown of traveling and permanent exhibits, including the loading/unloading of tractor-trailers with forklifts and other common equipment (i.e., personnel lifts, dollies, Johnson bars, lift gates, etc.)
Maintain the work environment of the Exhibit Shop and loading areas, including the condition of all tools necessary to the job and efficient storage of all materials necessary to production
Maintain shop and work areas organized, clean, well-lit, and free of unnecessary items
Performs minor troubleshooting and repairs to electronic or mechanical devices
Maintain museum lighting and assist with lighting installations
Interact with the museum visitors and act as a facilitator for program activities related to 'making.'
Must be able to work self-sufficiently with little supervision in support of after-hours and weekend events
Ability to work flexible schedules, including nights, weekends, and holidays as required
Maintain diary entries regarding the history of all exhibits. Maintain exhibit files and records relative to the maintenance and safety of individual exhibits
Perform other duties as assigned

Required

Under general supervision, the Exhibit Technician I installs new exhibits, performs daily maintenance, and reviews the safe operation of the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science exhibits
Work collaboratively with other technicians and management staff from both internal and external crews

The employee is regularly required to sit, use hands to handle or feel, talk, and hear
The employee is required to stand and walk for prolonged periods of time, along with climbing and reaching with hands and arms
The employee must occasionally lift and/or move from 50 to 70 pounds
Must be able to work in high and low places, be near fiberglass insulation and work under sinks and cabinets
Work is performed both indoors and in outdoor settings
Work is performed in a public attraction facility
May require driving to and from worksite locations
Employees may be exposed to hazardous and/or toxic substances, electrical shock, noise from equipment, and, depending on external weather conditions, wind, rain, cold, and heat
Background clearance
Drug screening as part of the Drug-Free Workplace Program

Preferred

Vocational/technical education preferred
Working knowledge of tools of the trade (including welding equipment, paint equipment, shop machines, and power tools) is preferred
Willingness to work a prior-established schedule, including weekends and evenings, when needed
Bilingual preferred (Spanish/English/Creole)
Familiar with the application of electronic exhibit mechanisms, such as audio/video systems, specialized lighting instruments, theatrical effects lighting, etc
