Responsibilities
Manage all aspects of the lab, overseeing and directing daily operations and the work of laboratory personnel
Assist in hiring, training, and guidance of laboratory personnel
Lead and supervise the experiments for various projects focused on laboratory research objectives involving in vivo animal studies
Provide instruction on lab protocols and procedures to students and staff
Contribute novel ideas of major methodological significance to the research projects, designing key experiments, and developing new techniques
Author or co-author of scientific journal manuscripts and book chapters
Report directly to funding agencies and journal editors
Prepare and implement research study budgets based on analysis of data
Responsible for managing lab operations, including space management, shipment of study samples to off-site labs for analysis, and maintaining and tracking experimental supply budgets for all projects
Organize and lead experiments for research missions in low-earth orbit and coordinate with NASA and other space implementation partners regarding in-flight research experiments, imaging, and downmass
Oversee the activities and staff of a laboratory including the supervision of entry/intermediate level research and/or instructional associates and laboratory support staff
Supervise the development and execution of major or multi-disciplinary research projects or instructional and experiment design
Qualification
Required
Seven years of related experience, education/training, OR a Bachelor's degree in related area plus three years of related experience/training
Advanced knowledge of research discipline or instructional design to collaborate effectively with faculty and function as a resource to research and instructional associates
Advanced theoretical knowledge of leukemia stem cells, biochemistry, cellular and molecular biology, including experience in establishing, maintaining, transfecting, and selecting clones from leukemic cell primary patients samples with expertise in sterile technique
Demonstrated experience with processing and ficolling patient peripheral blood and bone marrow in order to perform cryogenic database management
Scientific knowledge of DNA plasmids and primers
Focus of knowledge and skills dependent on area of specialty (laboratory research or instructional / experimental design)
Advanced and highly specific knowledge and expertise associated with conducting and reporting on scientific research experiments and findings
Theoretical knowledge in Molecular Biology or Biological Sciences generally acquired through a Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Demonstrated experience as a scientific leader
Experience with independently conceptualizing a project, designing protocols, planning for milestones, and preparing results for publication
Experiences project management and leadership skills with designing experiments for low-earth orbit
Advanced knowledge of a limited variety of specialized laboratory equipment
Proven skill in the operation and maintenance of various lab equipment such as confocal and quantitative fluorescent microscopes, centrifuges, nanodrop, IVIS imaging machine, and flow cytometer
Demonstrated ability to train others to use lab equipment
Leadership skills associated with planning work assignments, establishing priorities and scheduling instructional space
Ability to manage and oversee the daily operations of a lab
Experience to plan, coordinate, provide work direction to staff and other lab personnel, and organize professional training for lab
Ability and willingness to share information and serve as a mentor, and assist in hiring personnel
Experience with HR processes
Solid interpersonal skills to develop and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty and staff
Knowledge of data acquisition and analysis techniques
Solid interpersonal communication skills to effectively supervise staff
Excellent interpersonal skills including tact, diplomacy and flexibility with the ability to work in a team framework in conjunction with principles of community with staff, faculty, students, and external contacts
Ability to conduct and report on scientific experiments and findings
Skill in experimental design and adaptation of methods to achieve results
Ability to integrate data from multiple sources to synthesize conclusions
Ability to read and abstract scientific articles and apply to the design of experiments
Experience in the official review of manuscripts for publication in peer-review journals, including all interactions with Reviewers and Editors, and in the evaluation of grant proposals for potential funding
Knowledge of necessary lab safety procedures and requirements, as well as chemical disposal guidelines
Knowledge of basic lab safety requirements/procedures, EH&S regulations and methods to properly handle, clean-up, and dispose of biohazard materials, and regulations for safe record keeping
Strong organizational skills, including experience in laboratory record keeping, budget analysis and managing logistics
Demonstrated knowledge of lab safety rules
Demonstrated experience in caring for and handling small lab animals (mice, rats, guinea pigs, and rabbits) and in administering medications and anesthesia to perform phlebotomy and minor surgical procedures on animals
Experience in euthanizing small laboratory animals
Familiarity with the writing of Animal Subjects protocols and with the surgical procedures
Willingness and ability to work with rodents and/or other lab animals and/or infected samples
Experience with Institutional Research Board (IRB) protocol(s) submissions, amendments, and correspondence
Write and implement clinical protocols related to sample collection and processing
Demonstrated experience in DNA and RNA extraction and use of extracted products in various PCR methods
