Facilities and Infrastructure Safety Manager
Stanford University is seeking a Facilities and Infrastructure Safety Manager to join the Office of Facilities Planning and Management in the School of Medicine. Responsibilities
Build/maintain a comprehensive Facilities Infrastructure Safety & Compliance Program that ensures that that the School of Medicine facilities are compliant with government regulations
Serve as the primary safety and code compliance point of contact for the Planning, Project Management, and Facilities Operations teams and conduct plan reviews to ensure building designs are compliant with Federal, State and Local regulations
Work with Facilities Operations team members to complete safety review of designated planned maintenance projects
Work with design teams to ensure safety and environmental compliance in renovations and build projects. Ensure best practices, University guidelines, and regulations are followed for securing equipment, hazardous materials storage and use, environmental processes, machine guarding, signage, etc. Apply advanced safety knowledge and innovative thinking to fold in new technologies and methodologies in lab research
Serve as the technical expert on building code and fire code
Partner with University and regulatory subject matter experts on building facility safety, laboratory design issues, and inspections and to ensure alignment with local policies and best practices
Serve as the technical expert on all fire code and building code compliance issues. Act as a liaison with Authorities having Jurisdiction as required
Work with teams in understanding local and regional long-term compliance practices and implementing new program developments
Apply advanced knowledge and forward-thinking practices to act on regulation changes and meet regulatory timelines
Perform internal audits to monitor program effectiveness and external government inspections, compliance follow-up, and reporting
Deliver accurate documentation and provide clear weekly communications with clients, team members, regulators and/or other stakeholders, which can be in the form of small and large group presentations, complex reports, spreadsheets, webinars, and webpage content. Work with a complex database to develop tools, which align internal inspection procedures and regulatory codes
Work with Facilities Operations, laboratory operations staff, and departmental management on resolving safety and environmental issues expeditiously and compliance challenges are fully remediated
As needed, respond expeditiously to accidents, injuries, illnesses, odor complaints, and hazardous materials spills and investigate mold and asbestos incidences including partnering with University subject matter experts and facilities operations for remediation. Prepare accident reports and communicate with affected employees and managers within assigned locations. Perform risk assessments and report results to clients and management
Provide guidance and safety training to facility, staff, and students to ensure understanding of compliance expectations and best practices. Training methodologies include webinars, classroom sessions, direct interactions, and web-based assignments
Ensure the safe evacuation of personnel in assigned buildings
Ensure timely and thorough delivery of work assignments. Prioritize and verify work project completions, incorporating process improvement practices to improve efficiency and expectations. Lead by example the use of personal protective equipment, safety awareness, and demonstrate strong behavioral competencies
Qualification
Required
Bachelor's degree in arts/science in related allied/scientific field and seven years progressively responsible experience in occupational safety and health, emergency response/management, environmental science, and/or allied/scientific field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience
Demonstrated ability to conduct effective health and safety surveys, quantitative and qualitative exposure/ risk assessments, and most complex data analyses; ability to provide recommendations for exposure/risk control
Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with diverse audiences; ability to explain technical concepts clearly and concisely
Ability to maintain current knowledge of and interpret specific government agency requirements (statutes, regulations, licenses, and permits) and university policies
Working knowledge of the scientific and technical aspects of various regulatory requirements and potential impact on assigned work area(s)
Demonstrated supervisory/coaching expertise
Must possess and maintain a valid California non-commercial Class C Driver's License
Preferred
Advanced knowledge of fire and building codes
A basic understanding of chemistry and biology. Knowledge of biomedical research operations and the equipment used in these operations
Advanced knowledge of principles and practices of occupational environmental health and safety with preferably a master's degree and professional certification in the EHS field
Professional work experience in an educational setting preferred
Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Certified Biological Safety Professional (CBSP), Registered Biosafety Professional (RBP), or other relevant professional certification preferred
Must be able to independently problem-solve solutions to a wide range of circumstances in a complex organization
Ability to exercise tact and have superior diplomatic and inter-personal skills
Highly organized and detail oriented. Knowledge of computer systems, applications, and web page management
