Director, Machine Learning Engineering

Responsibilities
Build and scale the machine learning engineering function, setting vision and priorities
Deliver enterprise-grade ML systems aligned with company growth and innovation goals
Partner with senior leadership to shape AI strategy, roadmap, and investment priorities
Translate emerging AI/ML advancements into practical, high-impact solutions
Lead teams in developing, fine-tuning, and deploying cutting-edge models
Establish frameworks for scalable training, validation, deployment, and monitoring
Grow and mentor engineering and data science talent, fostering a culture of innovation
Develop and implement advanced AI/ML solutions aligned with strategic company goals, ensuring scalability and measurable impact
Lead the research, development, and deployment of sophisticated AI/ML models using Python, LangChain, LLMs, HuggingFace transformers, PyTorch, XGBoost, Scikit-learn, and NLP frameworks (spaCy, NLTK)
Architect and oversee ML pipelines, ensuring seamless integration with enterprise systems and cloud environments (AWS, GCP, Databricks)
Partner cross-functionally with Product, Engineering, and Business leadership to identify opportunities for AI/ML integration and optimization
Stay abreast of industry trends and advancements, applying them to maintain Prodege’s position as an innovator in applied AI
Establish and enforce best practices in MLOps, CI/CD, and model governance to ensure transparency, explainability, and compliance
Monitor and optimize model performance, ensuring reliability in production environments
Provide advanced guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and scientists, while building a high-performing team culture
Balance strategic vision with business practicality, applying the 80/20 rule to deliver impactful solutions quickly while maintaining high standards
Setting and managing goals, on-going coaching, corrective action, annual reviews, rewards/recognition, and team/individual development
Headcount forecasting, job descriptions, recruiting/hiring, termination
Ensuring compliance to company policy/practice (e.g. attendance, behavior, workplace attire), ensuring compliance to employment law (e.g. time keeping, anti-harassment and diversity)
Ensures availability to staff, team building, building rapport with individuals, encouraging strong collaborative relationships between individuals and departments, facilitating a healthy work/life mix, solicits and applies feedback (internal and external to team), self-improvement as a leader/manager of people

Qualification
Required
Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field
Ten or more (10+) years of experience in software development/engineering focused on machine learning, with at least 3+ years in leadership roles
Proven track record of deploying custom AI/ML solutions at scale, beyond off-the-shelf algorithms or pre-trained models
Expertise in Python (production-quality code) and SQL for big data exploratory analysis and feature engineering
Extensive experience in cloud data environments (AWS, GCP, Databricks)
Deep understanding of ML techniques and algorithms (DNN, Boosting Trees, Random Forests, etc.), with ability to select and apply the right model for each business case
Strong applied statistics skills, including design of experiments and statistical tests
Hands-on experience with PyTorch and modern NLP/LLM frameworks
Experience leading end-to-end ML development cycles: data exploration, preprocessing, training, tuning, deployment for batch and online inference in scalable production clusters
Understanding of modern API design and RESTful principles
Experience with large-scale datasets and distributed computing
Hands-on experience with Docker and/or Kubernetes
Effective communication and collaboration skills with stakeholders across all levels of the organization
Demonstrated ability to mentor and grow engineering teams
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
Preferred
Master's degree or PhD in AI, Machine Learning, or related fields
Experience with Ray for training, tuning, and serving ML models at scale
Experience with recommender systems in production
Knowledge of Scala or Rust programming languages
Certification in AI/ML-related disciplines
Extensive experience with AI frameworks such as LangChain, LLMs, HuggingFace, and RAG pipelines
Experience in Bayesian statistics and causal inference
Prior experience in building and scaling ML engineering functions within high-growth organizations
