Valley Metro is seeking an Accountant to maintain accurate capital asset and financial records while supporting the Agency’s financial reporting and audit processes. The role includes reconciling accounts, preparing financial reports, and ensuring compliance with GASB standards.

Responsibilities

Records and maintains capital asset activity, including additions, deletions, and construction in progress, and prepares related monthly reports

Assists with the timely preparation and distribution of two Annual Comprehensive Financial Reports including audit schedules, trial balances, financial statements, journal entries, and grant-related revenue and expenditure reports

Reviews and audits accounting and financial documents for accuracy and compliance; maintains accounting records and supports documentation for transactions, schedules, and financial statements

Analyzes and interprets accounting records to support fiscal year-end closure and the preparation of accurate and complete financial reports and summaries

Prepares workpapers and documentation for internal and external audits, responds to audit requests, explains financial practices, and assists with implementing recommended corrective actions

Reconciles accounts, investigates discrepancies, prepares adjusting journal entries, and conducts physical inventory as required

Performs other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned

Required

Bachelor's degree in accounting

three (3) years of experience in financial reporting or analysis

three (3) years of experience in general ledger accounting

OR an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above

Additional education cannot be substituted for experience

Knowledge of governmental accounting principles, including GAAP and GASB standards

Knowledge of financial reporting and general ledger accounting practices

Knowledge of capital asset accounting and account reconciliation methods

Knowledge of internal controls and audit processes

Knowledge of use of accounting and financial reporting systems

Skill in analyzing and reconciling financial and capital asset records

Skill in preparing financial reports and audit documentation

Skill in applying accounting standards to financial transactions

Skill in identifying and resolving account discrepancies

Skill in using financial systems for reporting and compliance

Skill in communicating effectively and maintaining accuracy in a deadline-driven environment

Preferred

Experience in a governmental or public-sector accounting environment, including exposure to GAAP and GASB standards

Demonstrate experience using ERP systems, financial reporting tools, and advanced Excel functions to support accurate analysis and reporting

Ability to collaborate effectively across teams and clearly communicate financial information
