Waste Collector

The City of Kenosha is seeking a Waste Collector responsible for the collection of waste materials and recyclables. The role involves operating various types of waste collection trucks, performing maintenance on equipment, and assisting with snow and ice removal activities.

Responsibilities

Operates Manual Side Loading (MSL) recycling truck to collect garbage and non-combustible waste materials
Operates rear loading bulk truck to collect scheduled curbside bulk items
Disposes of the same at the transfer station, landfill site, or other appropriate sites
Operates Automated Side Loading (ASL) garbage truck to collect recyclable items as prescribed by law or ordinance and disposes of the same at the Material Recovery Facility (MRF)
Conducts detailed pre-trip inspections daily to ensure equipment is safe for road operations
Conducts daily, weekly and monthly maintenance on equipment. This includes greasing all fittings on the automated arms and troubleshooting any possible issues with moving parts on the arms, including sensor maintenance and replacement as well as rubber disc replacement on arm/claw and any other small maintenance issues that may arise
Assists with cart maintenance and replacement in the field using a tablet and dedicated software
Assists in snow and ice removal activities
Must be able to work shifts of up to 16 hours (including evenings, weekends, and holidays) during snow and ice removal operations
May fill in driving the tractor-trailer hauling garbage from the transfer station to landfill
Fills in at drop-off site for bulk waste collection
Performs routine maintenance such as sweeping, mopping, snow shoveling, or other general maintenance duties in the buildings and on the grounds
Performs related duties as required, including work in other divisions

Required

High school diploma, HSED or GED
Must possess a valid Class B commercial driver's license (CDL), or instructional permit, with air brake endorsement at the time of application. Residents of Illinois must have interstate driving privileges in order to qualify
Recent work experience dealing directly with the public
Minimum of one (1) year work experience which involved regular and repetitive lifting of 40 pounds or more, or similar experience
Minimum of one (1) year of work experience physically working outdoors in all types of weather conditions (extreme cold/heat, snow, rain, etc.)
Ability to understand and effectively carry out oral and written instructions
Ability to read maps and follow written and oral directions
Ability to lift up to forty (40) pounds on a regular and repetitive basis
Ability to work in all kinds of weather conditions
Ability to operate standard, commercial, or specialized automotive equipment efficiently and safely
Ability to make minor repairs and adjustments of equipment
Ability to keep records and make reports
Ability to get along well with others, including co-workers and citizens of The City of Kenosha
Ability to pass a motor vehicle record review, criminal background check, post-offer physical examination, and drug screen
Considerable knowledge of occupational hazards and safe work practices
Working knowledge of commercial motor vehicle operation and maintenance
Working knowledge of hazards and safety precautions
Thoroughness; dependability

Preferred

Minimum of one (1) year work experience driving a commercial motor vehicle preferred
Previous route and/or delivery experience desirable
