Merced County is seeking Extra-Help Law Students to assist with legal research and document preparation. The role involves drafting legal documents, interviewing clients, and providing assistance under the supervision of an attorney.

Responsibilities

Researches, studies, interprets and applies laws, court decisions and other resources for use in the preparation of cases, opinions, pleadings, briefs, etc
Drafts a variety of legal documents
Interviews victims, witnesses and clients, including inmates of penal institutions
Prepares correspondence and reports
Eligible law students may appear in court in any public trial or proceeding under the direct and immediate supervision and in the physical presence of a supervising or designated attorney
Confer with attorneys, judges, investigators and other individuals regarding legal matter
Counsel and give advice to clients

Required

Currently enrolled in an accredited law school; or currently enrolled in the third or fourth years of college in an undergraduate program with a curriculum focused on the study of law
Accurately interpret and apply criminal, constitutional and administrative law
Present statements of fact, law and argument clearly and logically
Communicate effectively with others in person, in the court, and over the telephone
Operate a personal computer and other office equipment
Accurately prepare opinions, pleadings, briefs, responses, etc
Respond appropriately to situations
Maintain confidential information in accordance with legal standards and/or County regulations and meet deadlines under stressful conditions
Frequent use of depth perception, peripheral vision and color perception
Frequently lift, carry, reach, push, pull, twist and manipulate large and small objects
Frequent use of hand-eye coordination; use of data entry device; repetitive hand and arm motion; Normal dexterity, frequent holding and grasping
Occasionally lift and carry up to 40 pounds
Regular attendance is an essential function
Interpret and apply laws and legal authorities
Present statements of fact, law and argument clearly and logically
Interview witnesses and clients, including inmates of penal institutions, and reports on findings of facts
Accurately perform research

Preferred

Certified Law Student through the State Bar of California or qualify to be certified through the State Bar's Practical Training of Law Students Program

Benefits

Extra-help employees are entitled to accrue up to five (5) paid sick days (40 hours) in a 12-month period.
The County does provide benefits to those eligible under the State Workers Compensation and Unemployment Insurance statutes.
