COMPENSATION AND CLASSIFICATION ANALYST - HUMAN RESOURCES

The City of Durham is seeking a Compensation and Classification Analyst to join their Human Resources Department. This role involves researching, analyzing, and administering compensation programs and job classifications to ensure internal equity, external competitiveness, and compliance with applicable laws.

Responsibilities

Applies technical and professional expertise on Human Resources compensation and position classification processes; consults with hiring managers on compensation needs; assists employees in understanding compensation practices; conducts research and provides recommendations on competitive and cost-effective compensation practices; prepares and analyzes detailed and complex reports, spreadsheets, etc.; ensures compensation programs and strategies meet legal compliance; completes various audits and surveys
Determines and reviews pay offers for new hires, promotions, and internal transfers
Consults with hiring managers on compensation needs and assists employees in understanding pay practices
Researches and resolves compensation concerns to ensure internal equity and market competitiveness
Conducts market research and salary surveys; analyzes data and recommends competitive, cost-effective pay strategies
Maintains position classification and pay plans; evaluates positions and prepares class descriptions
Partners with external consultants on complex compensation studies
Maintains confidential compensation records and ensures compliance with legal and organizational requirements
Advises departments on pay administration and equity practices
Performs advanced HRIS functions including position control, system updates, and report generation
Reviews and reconciles compensation-related reports, invoices, and funding data for accuracy and cost efficiency
Develops and delivers supervisor training on compensation and classification topics
Creates and maintains forms, databases, and reports; prepares related correspondence and materials
Completes special projects and other related duties as assigned

Required

Bachelor's degree in human resources, Business Administration, Public Administration, or a related field
Experience in pay programs, compensation, and classification work
Strong knowledge of compensation and classification principles and practices
Skilled in data analysis, reporting, and use of Microsoft Excel
Ability to interpret and apply policies, procedures, and regulations
Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills
Effective verbal and written communication abilities
Ability to maintain confidentiality and provide excellent customer service
Proficient with computers, office equipment, and related software
Ability to prioritize work, meet deadlines, and work collaboratively
Knowledgeable of employment Federal, State, and Local laws pertaining to Human Resources practice
Knowledgeable of classification and compensation systems and methodologies
Knowledgeable of quantitative and qualitative research methodologies, data collection, analysis, synthesis and research finding presentation
Strong analytical and research skills
Actively commissioned or obtain commission within one year of employment as a North Carolina Notary Public

Preferred

SHRM certification or Compensation certification is strongly preferred
Compensation certification preferred
