Finance & Operations Director
Local Progress and the Local Progress Impact Lab are seeking a Finance & Operations Director responsible for the day-to-day financial management of their combined entities. The role involves financial oversight, innovating operational systems, and managing compliance while supporting a collaborative environment.

Responsibilities
Lead the financial oversight of Local Progress and the Impact Lab by ensuring financial functions—including budgeting, forecasting, reporting, and auditing—are transparent, disciplined, and aligned with strategic long-term goals
Partner with the development team to strengthen financial strategy, resource allocation, and compliance with funder and regulatory requirements
Responsible for ongoing financial responsibilities such as:
Supporting external bookkeepers with annual audit and preparation, review and filing of 990s
Managing accounts payable and receivable
Administering quarterly financial reconciliation between Local Progress (501(c)4) and Local Progress Impact Lab (501(c)3)
Creating and managing cash flow projections
Lead on assessing organizational gaps in operational, IT, and administrative infrastructure and aligning across teams to develop solutions
Continuously improve internal systems, processes, and policies to enhance efficiency, responsiveness, and collaboration across teams
Work closely with the Operations Manager to ensure IT systems and data security systems meet organizational needs
Lead on legal and compliance operations, providing guidance to the Managing Director, People & Operations and Executive Team on risk management, governance, insurance, contracts, and compliance frameworks
Manage cost-sharing and sub-granting relationship between Local Progress (501(c)4) and Local Progress Impact Lab (501(c)3), ensuring compliance with IRS laws
Lead on lobbying compliance, identifying gaps where we need additional legal support and research, and leading staff lobbying training
Ensure organizational compliance with document retention policy
Serve as a senior leader of the People & Operations team, partnering closely with the Managing Director, People & Operations on team goal-setting, workplanning, and retreats
Supervise, empower, and mentor the Operations Manager and Events Manager, supporting the integration of their work into cross-team workflows
Build strong cross-team partnerships that integrate operations seamlessly with programmatic work
In collaboration with other supervisors, work to cultivate and nurture a strong and healthy culture that aligns with organizational values and advances racial equity
Qualification
Required
At least 10 years of relevant experience, including at least 5 years experience in the financial management of a nonprofit organization with a budget of at least $5M
3+ years of demonstrated success in supervising multiple staff working across a breadth of functions
Experience managing financial reconciliations between a 501(c)3 and 501(c)4
Strong financial acumen—understanding of practices, theories, and policies involved in business processes, bringing knowledge and experience across various finance matters, including expertise with GAAP, audits, and other regulatory requirements in the nonprofit financial field–with the ability to connect financial decisions to strategic priorities
Proven success in building and scaling values-aligned operational systems that support organizational growth and impact
Technologically savvy with experience with using and innovating systems that support efficiency and collaboration in a remote workplace (Currently Local Progress and the Impact Lab use Google Workspace, Bill.com, and Quickbooks)
Attention to detail: can manage and track a high volume of information with high attention to detail and minimal error
Skilled project manager: can keep multiple projects on track, anticipate obstacles and identify ways to navigate challenges, and communicate expectations and progress regularly with a remote team of co-workers
Proactive communicator who can engage with multiple stakeholders with warmth and professionalism
Strong relationship builder: cultivates trust, responsive to feedback, thrives in a highly collaborative environment, and is eager to support others
A demonstrated commitment to social, racial, and economic justice and an interest in local policy, politics, and government
Preferred
Experience managing nonprofit budgets of $10M+ with annual conference budgets of $1M+
Experience with bringing external bookkeeping 'in-house'
