Controller

PCs for People is a national organization focused on digital equity, and they are seeking a Controller to oversee day-to-day accounting operations and ensure compliance with financial reporting standards. The Controller will manage accounting staff, maintain internal controls, and support strategic financial decision-making.

Responsibilities

Oversee all accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, grants accounting, and fixed assets
Prepare timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards
Lead the monthly close process and ensure adherence to reporting deadlines
Analyze financial results and variances; provide insights and recommendations to the CFO
Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, including IRS and nonprofit reporting requirements
Manage the annual audit process, serving as the primary liaison with external auditors
Maintain and strengthen internal controls, accounting policies, and procedures
Support preparation of Form 990 and other required filings in coordination with the CFO and external advisors
Support the CFO in the annual budgeting and forecasting process
Monitor budgets and grant expenditures to ensure compliance with donor and funding restrictions
Assist program leaders with financial reporting and interpretation as needed
Oversee accounting for grants, restricted funds, and donor-designated contributions
Ensure accurate tracking, reporting, and compliance with grant and funder requirements
Supervise, mentor, and develop finance team
Assign work, review deliverables, and ensure cross-training and coverage
Foster a collaborative, accountable, and continuous-improvement-oriented finance team
Maintain and optimize accounting systems and financial software
Identify and implement process improvements to increase efficiency, accuracy, and scalability
Partner with internal teams to support organizational growth and operational needs

Required

Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field highly preferred
Minimum of 5–8 years of progressive accounting experience, including supervisory responsibility
Strong knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit accounting principles
Experience managing audits and working with external auditors
Proficiency with accounting systems and Excel
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
High attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple priorities
Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain financial concepts to non-financial stakeholders
Proven leadership and people management capabilities
High integrity and commitment to the organization's mission
Exceptional organization, prioritization, and project coordination abilities
Strong interpersonal communication skills; comfortable working with board members, executives, and employees
Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities within tight deadlines

Preferred

CPA or CMA designation highly preferred
Prior experience in a national or multi-entity nonprofit organization
Experience with grants management and restricted fund accounting
Genuine interest in people, technology, and digital equity
