Responsibilities
Operate Solid Waste Heavy Equipment: Operate an ALV truck equipped as a right side of the road operating unit with a 10 ft. boom suction hose through residential and high traffic areas. Utilize a mechanical joystick located inside vehicle cab to manipulate boom suction hose to collect leaves, grass, and loose yard waste trimmings. When not in use, during travel, ensure boom suction hose is secured in cradle holding location and does not swing free. Utilize knowledge of hydraulic machinery and Power Take-Off (PTO) provisions for large vehicles to control boom/suction hose movements, rear door locks, dump body, and engine throttle. Operate console with computer-controlled functions/switches, to control PTO, throttle, and tailgate open/closing activities. Utilize an electronic display screen which acts as a manual for operating the vehicle. Keep records of the loads and tonnage weight for trips to disposal facility. Utilize written hard copy or electronic directions to follow and stay on route. When necessary, utilize a non-automated vehicle with pull behind leaf vacuum to perform duties. When necessary, direct assigned helpers and maintain safe environment and awareness of welfare of helpers. Unclog suction hose throughout the day ensuring that at no time the PTO is engaged during the process. As assigned, operate a variety of Solid Waste equipment, including but not limited to Rear Loader Garbage Truck, Clam Truck, and Roll-Off Truck. Ensure truck is equipped with necessary equipment for day’s assignment including hardhat, hearing and eye protection, rake, and suction hose clean-out rod
Perform & Comply with Safety Measures: Perform daily pre-and post-trip vehicle inspections and maintain accurate vehicle log. Inspect equipment prior to and after use in order to identify needed maintenance and report needs to supervisor or Fleet division. Observe and listen to equipment during use to identify malfunctions or parts in need of replacement. When necessary, shut down equipment to prevent further damage or hazards. Utilize proper body mechanics and ergonomics in performance of work. Use operating skills, learned safe practices and awareness of the surrounding area to avoid injury or damage to persons or property. Utilize spotters, flaggers or helpers as needed to maintain a safe working environment. When potentially unsafe conditions are observed make efforts to avoid or correct and notify responsible supervisor or safety representative in a timely manner
Manage Waste Disposal: Work weekends, holidays, evenings, and nights depending on special events waste collection schedule. Convey basic information to the public when approached with questions
Perform other duties as assigned
Qualification
Required
High school diploma or equivalent
At least one (1) year of experience operating CDL vehicles
Must demonstrate proficiency operating right-side-drive vehicles within 60 days of hire
Must obtain FEMA ICS 100, 700 and 552 within three (3) months of hire
Valid South Carolina Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with air brake provision, or the equivalent CDL from their state of residence
