Responsibilities
Administer and support PostgreSQL environments, including performance tuning, monitoring, troubleshooting, and routine maintenance
Lead PostgreSQL database design and architecture, including schema design, indexing strategies, and database object optimization
Plan and execute database migrations to AWS, including deployment recommendations for Aurora PostgreSQL and/or RDS PostgreSQL and post-migration stabilization
Manage high availability, load balancing, replication, and recovery strategies, including disaster recovery preparedness and annual testing
Install, configure, upgrade, and patch PostgreSQL and related tooling; manage installation standards and configuration baselines
Implement and maintain monitoring, reporting, and alerting to maximize availability, reliability, and performance
Perform backup and restore operations for both daily use and disaster recovery; automate and validate backup integrity
Identify and resolve performance issues by analyzing metrics and query behavior; optimize queries and indexes, tune memory settings, and remediate bottlenecks
Support data export, load processing, and transformations (ETL) as needed; maintain familiarity with PostgreSQL extensions
Implement and enforce database security controls including access controls, encryption, and authentication configuration (LDAP and local accounts)
Collaborate with infrastructure teams to provision database servers, storage, and platform resources across on-prem and AWS
Automate operational processes such as backups, monitoring, and patching using tools such as Unix shell scripting, PowerShell, Python, Ansible, and Stone Branch
Support PostgreSQL services running in containerized environments by troubleshooting database-level issues and collaborating with platform teams for platform-level concerns (not responsible for Kubernetes infrastructure support)
Provide mentorship, coaching, and training to other DBAs and contribute to standards, documentation, and operational best practices
Qualification
Required
Strong PostgreSQL administration experience, including troubleshooting and performance tuning
Experience with AWS database migrations and supporting PostgreSQL in AWS environments (RDS and/or Aurora PostgreSQL)
Experience with high availability, replication, backup/restore, and disaster recovery processes
Hands-on experience with monitoring and alerting and the ability to diagnose and resolve production issues
Advanced shell scripting skills and experience automating operational tasks
Experience working with or alongside containerized environments and related tooling (for example, Kubernetes based platforms), Percona tooling, and EnterpriseDB (EDB)
Strong communication skills, both written and oral, with the ability to explain technical concepts clearly
Ability to plan and execute work independently while collaborating effectively across teams
Preferred
Experience with Microsoft SQL Server administration
Experience with MongoDB administration, including Replica Sets, Sharding, and data movement tools (mongodump, mongorestore, mongoexport, mongoimport)
Familiarity with RHEL and Windows Server
Familiarity with Jira
Familiarity with ITIL change management processes
Familiarity with Grafana and monitoring tools such as Nagios, Zabbix, and Prometheus
Experience with infrastructure-as-code and automation tooling such as Terraform, Ansible, and related CI/CD practices
