Research (HPC) Systems Adminstrator
Boston College is a Jesuit, Catholic university located near downtown Boston. The HPC Research Systems Administrator will manage and maintain a High Performance Computing (HPC) research cluster while providing consultation and support to faculty and students in various research domains.
Responsibilities
Provides Linux server and some Windows server administration services
Sets up and maintains and research/teaching applications both on BC’s HPC Linux cluster and virtual machines
Employs scripting to automate system administration tasks and processes
Works with faculty and researchers to understand their current and future needs, and develops solutions to address them
Training to users on existing system
Installs and manages specialized teaching and research software
Explores and promotes technologies that facilitate teaching and research
Knowledge of job scheduling software: SLURM
Ability to work with vendor support to address issues
Work with other areas of IT to promote sustainable system architecture
Commitment to continuous learning and skill development
Understand the mission and strategic goals of the University
Be able to view and understand the implications of the larger picture both within Research Services and the University at large
Identify and understand complex challenges, work through the challenges, and recommend appropriate solutions
Be oriented to innovative approaches to problem solving
Have proven competencies to work in a team environment that aspires to service excellence with strong individual organizational, planning, and communication skills
Be able to build complex open-sourced software applications
Knowledge of Spack for module building is a plus
Qualification
Required
Bachelor's degree (or 7+ years experience in HPC system administration and architecture)
Hands-on experience with setting up and managing Linux and Windows physical and virtual servers
Experience in an academic/research environment
Ability to script (for example, to automate system administration tasks and processes, tie instruments to storage and computation)
Willingness to learn and adapt to changing needs and scope of work
Ability to work with faculty and researchers to address their research technology needs
Excellent verbal, written (including documenting code) and interpersonal communications skills to include presentation skills and the ability to influence others
Preferred
Knowledge of Spack for module building is a plus
Experience with database administration is an advantage
Knowledge and experience with container technology and/or cloud platforms; experience with code-to-infrastructure systems is an advantage
