The County of Riverside's Transportation Department is seeking an Engineering Technician II to support the Traffic Engineering division. This role involves performing field inspections, reviewing permit applications, and ensuring compliance with various engineering standards and regulations.

Responsibilities

Investigate and make diagrams, reports, and recommendations on high accident locations and other sites; coordinate traffic census programs; collect, interpret, record, and make graphical presentations from information gathered in traffic, transportation and other studies and surveys
Perform limited design of roadways and appurtenant structures; revise elements of simple engineering designs within established limits
Calculate and compute quantity and cost of materials for a variety of construction projects; prepare maps using manual or computer aided techniques
Enter appropriate computer commands into system for mapping processes; digitize maps for data entry; operate plotter for computerized map preparation

Perform moderately difficult sub-professional field and office Engineering work
Set up and maintain filing and indexing systems for road record documents, survey records, maps, transportation data, and other engineering record materials
Inspect the construction of less complex public works projects and subdivision tracts to assure compliance with plans and specifications
Field duties: transport and set mobile radar feedback trailer; investigate traffic concerns from the public, measure and determine placement of traffic control signs and markings, conduct sight distance measurements
Make computations and record readings; check and prepare field notes
Office Duties: Draft geometric alignment, cross-sectional, and profile drawings and maps using manual or computer aided techniques
Conduct title and property owner research; prepare legal descriptions and various legal documents relating to real property; calculate bearings, distances, areas, and perform other calculations
Under direct supervision, preform responsible sub-professional civil engineering work of a technically specialized nature in connection with traffic engineering. Complete traffic related investigations and provide reports and recommendations; collects, interprets, records, and makes graphical presentations of information gathered. Required

Three years of sub-professional civil engineering experience
Completion of college level courses from an accredited college or university in civil engineering or closely related subjects such as land surveying, soils erosion, soils testing, blueprint reading, mathematics, computer graphics, or hydrology may substitute for up to two years of the required experience on the basis of 12 semester or 18 quarter units equaling one year of the required full-time experience
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in surveying engineering or civil engineering
A valid Certificate of Registration as an Engineer-in-Training or Surveyor-in-Training issued by the California State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers may substitute for two years of the required sub-professional engineering experience
Knowledge of: Mathematics including algebra, geometry and trigonometry; the basic practices of engineering design and construction, traffic control and land surveying; manual and automated drafting techniques; field and office procedures relating to hydrography; procedures related to construction inspection
Ability to: Read and interpret legal descriptions, engineering drawings, survey notes, and tract descriptions; assist in the preparation of designs, plans, estimates, reports, and specifications; collect and analyze traffic, transportation, hydrologic, and other data and prepare reports, interpretations and recommendations; compile and enter data into computer system for computer aided mapping; perform survey field work, inspect public works projects and subdivision tracts; maintain effective relations with others
Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License is required for traveling to various inspection sites

Preferred

Experience using ArcGIS and MicroStation
Experience working in civil, transportation, or traffic engineering environments
Public sector field experience
Knowledge of traffic control
Experience with signing and striping operations
