Transport Maint Crew Chief
Texas Department of Transportation is seeking a Transportation Maintenance Crew Chief to lead a skilled team in maintaining vital transportation infrastructure. The role involves managing a crew of maintenance technicians, responding to emergencies, and ensuring efficient operation of maintenance activities.
Government Administration
Responsibilities
Assists during accidents and emergency weather situations to sand bridges and roads and put up warning signs and organize response of crews
Assists in administration of the maintenance section
Maintains records on material and equipment used and employee time sheets
Operates light and heavy equipment
Performs some maintenance and repair on equipment and trains crew members on the use of equipment
Serves as a lead worker by scheduling daily work assignments; serving as a resource for complex questions and troubleshooting of problems; presenting operational updates to the supervisor; providing input on team members' career conversations; and approving leave requests to ensure operational coverage
Inspects roads while enroute to and from job site and reports problems to supervisors
Performs other job responsibilities as assigned
Qualification
Required
High School Grad or Equivalent in general education
5 years experience in roadway maintenance related work. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis
Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle
Must have a Class 'A' Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with 'N' endorsement or have obtained the 'N' endorsement within 120 calendar days from date of employment
Extensive knowledge of methods, procedures, equipment, and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance work
Extensive knowledge of The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices
Considerable knowledge of incident management procedures
Considerable knowledge of inventory/stock control procedures
Considerable knowledge of applicable industry safety standards, guidelines, and specification codes
Expert skill in operating light and heavy highway equipment
Expert skill in leading, assigning, reviewing, and monitoring the work of others
Expert skill in coordinating labor, materials, and equipment
Expert skill in prioritizing and organizing work assignments
Expert skill in using applicable hand and power tools, equipment, and mechanical devices of the trade
Expert skill in maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others
Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
Exercises logic and reasoning to define problems, establish facts and draw valid conclusions; makes decisions that support business objectives and goals
Subject to outside environmental conditions; no effective weather protection
Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour
Subject to noise and vibration
Subject to hazards-moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals
Subject to atmospheric conditions-fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, poor ventilation
Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device
Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs
Sitting - prolonged periods of time
Climbing - ascending/descending ladders, stairs, scaffoldings, ramps, etc
Stooping-bending body downward and forward by bending spine at waist
Standing-prolonged periods of time
Talking-expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words
Visual Acuity-operate motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment and determine work quality/make general observations of facilities/structures
This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre-employment physical
Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions
Required to respond on nights and weekends in emergency situations
Required to work weekends and holidays
Required to work hours other than 8 to 5
Required to work under exposure to inclement weather conditions
Required to wear personal protective equipment provided by employer and comply with all safety requirements
Must attend work regularly and observe approved work hours
Must be able to report for duty within 60 minutes of notification on a 24-hour basis to respond to emergency situations
