Drafter I (General Engineering Technician I) - Decatur Area Office

The Texas Department of Transportation is seeking a Drafter I to perform and coordinate advanced transportation engineering operations and maintenance support work. The role involves tasks such as construction inspection, equipment operation, and preparing plans and specifications while working closely with other employees and the public.

Government Administration

Responsibilities

May serve as a lead worker and the related tasks
May train other employees
Performs detail design and quantity checks for plans, specifications, and estimate (PS&E)
Performs pavement evaluations and operates data collection equipment
Prepares plans, specifications, and estimate (PS&E) using automated programs; reviews plans, enters data and updates, stores and maintains PS&E documents and files
Researches plan sets and reviews proposed construction plans, specifications, and estimate (PS&E) and supporting documents for accuracy and completeness to ensure compliance with state and federal laws, policies, procedures and design guidelines
Reviews and assists in the development of traffic control plans, coordinates with law enforcement agencies, monitors lane closures at construction sites, documents changes in the traffic control setup and coordinates with the Public Information Officer
Performs other job responsibilities as assigned
Drafting designs
Field investigation
Plan review
Creating funding proposals
Providing status updates on projects with TxDOT Leadership
Meeting with subject matter experts on plans and designs
Other duties as assigned

Required

High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies
4 years in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, or related work experience. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent)
Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle
Mandatory: Safety Impact Certificate
Materials used in highway/bridge construction and maintenance
The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices
Maintenance concepts, methods, policies and requirements
Applicable plans, specifications and estimates preparation, review, processing and compliance requirements
Basic traffic management and control procedures
Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines, and specification codes
Planning, coordinating and handling multiple projects within area of responsibility to meet short and long-term deadlines
Preparing and maintaining confidential and sensitive records, files, and reports
Using computers, applicable programs, applications, and systems
Maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others
Subject to environmental conditions; protection from weather but not temperature changes
Subject to noise
Subject to vibration
Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device
Light work: Lift up to 20 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 10 lbs
Balancing-walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling
Talking-expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words
Hearing-perceive sound at normal speaking levels; receive information by oral communication
Repetitive Motion-substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers
Close Visual Acuity-work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading
Required to work weekends and holidays
Required to work hours other than 8 to 5
Required to work under exposure to inclement weather conditions
Required to wear personal protective equipment provided by employer and comply with all safety requirements
