Deputy Supervisor, Domestic Violence Homicide Unit

The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office is seeking a Deputy Supervisor for the Domestic Violence Homicide Unit to oversee the prosecution of complex intimate partner domestic violence homicides. This role involves supervising Assistant State's Attorneys, managing case assignments, and ensuring the fair prosecution of cases while collaborating with various units within the office.

Responsibilities

Supervise the DV Homicide Unit which vertically prosecutes complex, high-profile, intimate partner domestic violence homicides
Ensure that cases assigned to the DV Homicide Unit ASAs, from assignment to disposition, are prosecuted fairly and handled properly
Ensure that the ASAs assigned to the DV Homicide Unit are appropriately performing all aspects of their jobs
Communicate with upper management as well as different areas of CCSAO such as the Felony Review Unit, Grand Jury/ Branch 66, Juvenile Justice Bureau, Criminal Appeals Division, Special Litigation/Post Conviction Unit, and the Civil Actions Bureau
Provide guidance and assistance to the DV Homicide Unit ASAs on case management and strategy
Work collaboratively with the Special Victims’ Bureau Chief and Deputy Bureau Chief on case assignments
Review all Memoranda from DV Homicide Unit ASAs to upper management
Identify any training needs of the DV Homicide Unit or Felony Trial Division and work collaboratively with the Director of Training on those needs
Handle their own caseload of highly complex or noteworthy matters

Required

Must have a minimum of 12 years of litigation experience in criminal law with significant experience handling First Degree Murder prosecutions
Demonstrated Strong Leadership skills and the ability to motivate others
Ability to provide Guidance and supervision to experienced ASAs in the management of their caseloads
Must have significant experience in the prosecution of complex matters including 4th, 5th and 6th Amendment issues, intimate partner/gender-based violence, and motion practice including proof of other crimes, Lynch, and forfeiture by wrongdoing; significant jury trial experience; Grand Jury practice; and the management and use of uncooperative witnesses
Must have strong analytical, writing and oral advocacy skills; advanced case law and statutory knowledge in criminal law and procedure; and must serve as a personal and professional resource and thought partner to Domestic Violence Homicide Unit attorneys and CCSAO colleagues
Must consistently demonstrate sound judgment, critical thinking, dedication to work product, and effective time management
Must uphold the mission, vision, and values of the Office at all times
Must exercise integrity and decorum in all situations

Preferred

Prior formal supervisory experience in the Office is preferred
Experience handling intimate partner/gender-based violence cases preferred
