Director of Philanthropy
ALK Positive Inc. is a patient-driven, volunteer-led nonprofit dedicated to improving the lives of people with ALK-positive cancer. The Director of Philanthropy is responsible for designing and leading a comprehensive fundraising strategy to support the organization's research investments and mission activities, focusing on securing major gifts and managing donor relationships.
Responsibilities
Develop and execute ALK Positive’s annual and multi-year fundraising plan aligned with research goals, patient programs, and strategic priorities
Lead the major gifts strategy, cultivating and stewarding donors capable of five-, six-, and seven-figure gifts
Expand and manage a growing donor pipeline informed by wealth screening, prospect research, and community engagement
Partner with scientific advisors and the Research Review Committee in collaboration with the Medical Committee leadership to translate ALK-positive research needs—including areas such as MRD, resistance mechanisms, and next-generation therapies—into compelling philanthropic cases for support
Drive special fundraising initiatives, including a multi-year research campaign and future endowment opportunities
Develop personalized stewardship pathways, including impact reports, lab or investigator briefings, virtual donor meetings, and recognition programs
Engage ALK Positive’s active patient community to build a culture of philanthropy across survivors, caregivers, advocates, and volunteers
Represent the organization in donor meetings, community events, and national oncology conferences as appropriate
Oversee all grants processes, including LOIs, proposals, progress reports, and compliance with scientific deliverables
Strengthen corporate partnerships with biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies involved in targeted therapies, diagnostics, and precision oncology
Explore sponsorships, scientific collaborations, and cause-marketing opportunities that align with ALK Positive’s research mission
Collaborate with ALK Positive’s communications team to develop fundraising materials, donor stories, case statements, event content, and campaign messaging
Ensure all philanthropic communications are scientifically accurate, patient-centered, and aligned with ALK Positive’s tone of hope, community, and urgency
Manage development staff, consultants, and volunteers as the philanthropy program grows
Work closely with the Executive Director / Medical Director, Medical Committees, and Board of Directors to elevate fundraising engagement
Serve as staff lead for the Board Development Committee, preparing materials and supporting fundraising strategies
Help build the systems, processes, and metrics needed for a modern, data-driven development operation
Maintain high-quality donor data and reporting in ALK Positive’s CRM
Uphold best practices in donor intent, ethics, data privacy, and nonprofit accounting
Develop and manage the philanthropy budget and revenue projections
Qualification
Required
Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
Minimum of 7 years of progressive fundraising experience, with proven success in major gifts
Demonstrated ability to close five- and six-figure gifts; experience with seven-figure solicitations preferred
Strong communication skills with the ability to distill complex scientific concepts—including targeted therapy and precision oncology—into compelling donor narratives
Experience working with senior leadership, scientific advisors, and high-level volunteers
Organized, strategic, and data-driven, with excellent follow-through
Preferred
Experience in a cancer research, rare disease, or health-science–oriented nonprofit
Familiarity with targeted therapy, lung cancer, or MRD-focused research
Comfort engaging patients and families in emotionally sensitive contexts
Experience building a development program in a growing or early-stage organization
