Director of Finance
Sierra Executive Solutions Inc. is a 3rd party search firm recruiting for a non-profit healthcare client's Director of Finance career opportunity in Reno, NV. The Director of Finance will manage financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, and reporting functions while providing actionable financial insights to support decision-making and financial performance. This role involves collaborating with leaders across the organization to improve financial efficiency and support operational and growth priorities.
Responsibilities
Lead the financial planning and reporting process, including annual budgeting, forecasting, and financial modeling to align with organizational goals and operational needs
Prepare and present forecast updates and budget-to-actual analyses to executive leadership and department leaders, explaining variances and recommending adjustments as needed
Prepare and maintain the general ledger and financial statements in accordance with GAAP and applicable federal reporting requirements
Oversee preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports, ensuring accuracy, clarity, and timely delivery for decision-making
Analyze financial and operational performance, identifying trends, risks, and opportunities to support improved outcomes
Provide recommendations to enhance financial performance, support growth initiatives, and strengthen cost controls
Serve as a key financial partner to the CFO team by providing ongoing analysis, scenario planning, and decision support
Present complex financial information to company management team and other stakeholders in a clear, practical, and actionable manner
Collaborate with department heads to align financial goals with departmental objectives, operational and strategic plans
Lead, mentor, and develop finance team members (e.g., analysts, accountants, and Accounting Manager), promoting a culture of accountability and continuous improvement
Establish team goals, support performance evaluations, and provide coaching and development to build organizational financial capability
Implement process improvements to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and effectiveness in reporting, analysis, and planning workflows
Ensure compliance with federal and state financial regulations, regulatory reporting standards, internal controls, and generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP)
Support organizational risk assessment and mitigation activities related to financial performance, budgeting, and reporting
Maintain current knowledge of industry trends, reimbursement models, and regulatory updates that impact financial practices, particularly in healthcare/nonprofit environments
Qualification
Required
Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or a related field is required
7+ years of progressive finance experience, including financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, and reporting
3+ years of supervisory or team-lead experience with demonstrated success developing staff and managing performance
Proven experience supporting financial planning and reporting in a complex, multi-departmental organization
Knowledge of finance, accounting, budgeting, forecasting, and cost control principles
Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP)
Knowledge of automated financial and accounting reporting systems and tools
Knowledge of short- and long-term budgeting and forecasting, rolling budgets, and product-line profitability analysis
Advanced understanding of financial planning, forecasting, and analysis techniques, including interpretation of complex financial data
Strong analytical and strategic thinking skills to support organizational planning and decision-making
Ability to analyze financial data and prepare accurate financial reports, statements, dashboards, and projections
Skill in operating a personal computer using advanced programs and spreadsheets, including expert proficiency in Microsoft Excel
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional journals, healthcare/business periodicals, and governmental regulations
Excellent communication and presentation skills, including the ability to translate financial concepts for non-financial audiences
Ability to solve practical problems and manage multiple variables in situations with limited standardization
High level of integrity with the ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information appropriately
Strong attention to detail, mathematical accuracy, and commitment to data completeness and quality
Demonstrated leadership skills; ability to motivate teams, coach staff, and build positive cross-functional partnerships
Preferred
Master's degree in Business Administration (MBA) or related field is preferred
CPA, CFA, or other relevant certification is a plus
Experience in healthcare, nonprofit, or FQHC environments is very strongly preferred, including knowledge of financial practices relevant to community health organizations
