Deputy Chief Probation Officer

Responsibilities
Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff and interns; processes employee concerns and problems; assigns and directs work; counsels and disciplines; completes employee performance appraisals; approves vacation and leave time
Directs the activities of the Adult and Juvenile Investigations and Adult and Juvenile Supervision units; oversees the overall operations and programming in the Juvenile Hall; evaluates cases adjudicated for probation; organizes, schedules and assigns caseload; maintains balance of cases assigned for both juvenile and adult caseloads
Reviews and enters disposition of cases into computer system in a specified manner; verifies information entered is complete and accurate; researches any missing or incorrect information to detect problems; determines resolution and enters into system files
Reviews, edits, and assesses probation reports prepares for court by subordinate personnel; represents the department at court proceedings and presents facts
Serves as departmental liaison and coordinates with the Court and other criminal justice agencies
Coordinates and implements computer software applications; consults with other departments in the integration of system implementation; provides systems training to departmental staff
Utilizes a computer and printer to enter, store, and retrieve data; compiles and produces reports; composes routine correspondence; disseminates information to others
Assists departmental staff in the daily performance of duties; provides information, advice, and guidance; analyzes problems and formulates solution
Participates in the development of the departmental budget; compiles data; analyzes requirements; forwards to Administration for assimilation into budget request
Prepares and submits documents and reports relating to probation investigations, child custody mediations, and other related matters
May manage institutions caseload; prepares declarations for violations of probation
Responds to inquiries via telephone or in writing for general information from other agencies and the public
Performs data entry and file location tasks associated with cases; determines case status
Qualification
Required
A. Bachelor's degree (preferably in behavioral science, social science, psychology, sociology, criminology or a related field) from an accredited college or university
B. Two (2) years of work experience supervising, directing, coordinating, and providing administrative oversight to professional law enforcement functions such as probation, patrol, investigations, corrections, or a directly related field
Preferred
Experience performing professional probation work is strongly preferred
Benefits
12 paid holidays (96 hours) per year, plus 3 floating holidays
2 weeks per year during the first five years of service; 3 weeks a year - 5- 10 years of service; 4 weeks a year - 10 plus years of service; Note - accrued vacation leave may not be used until after six months of employment.
Exempt members of this unit shall not receive overtime compensation, but shall be entitled to a total of 60 hours administrative leave annually.
Sick leave shall accrue from the date of initial employment at the rate of 3.7 hours per pay period (which is equivalent to 96 hours per years) for regular full-time employees with no maximum accrual. Unused sick leave may be converted to PERS service credit upon retirement.
The County will contribute 100% of the vision premium for eligible employees and dependents.
The County will maintain life insurance in the amount equal to two times the gross annual salary.
The County is in the Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS) coordinated with Social Security.
The County will contribution $70.00 per pay period to the employee's designated deferred compensation program. The additional $50 requires an employee match.
IRC Section 125 plan available for pre-tax payroll deductions for contributions towards un-reimbursed medical expenses and dependent care.
