Lead Mechanical Engineer - Airbuild Pod

Airbuild Inc is pioneering deployable climate infrastructure that filters water, captures carbon, and operates entirely on solar power. They are seeking a Lead Mechanical Engineer to own the mechanical architecture, design strategy, and deployment readiness of their Pods, working cross-functionally to ensure robust and scalable systems.

Responsibilities

Own the end-to-end mechanical design of Airbuild Pods, including algae reactors, tanks, enclosures, structural frames, and mounting systems
Define and maintain the mechanical system architecture across generations of Pods
Lead fluid system design, including piping networks, pumps, valves, filtration components, and flow control
Perform and review engineering analyses (flow rates, pressure losses, structural loading, thermal behavior, material performance, environmental exposure)
Develop scalable, modular designs suitable for field deployment
Oversee prototype builds, bench testing, and field trials and Lead root-cause analysis and iteration based on field performance data
Support on-site deployments and commissioning when required
Establish testing protocols, acceptance criteria, and reliability benchmarks
Drive DFM/DFA strategies and supplier selection
Create and review drawings, BOMs, assembly instructions, and documentation
Integrate mechanical subsystems with sensors, controls, filtration, solar power, and biochar systems
Collaborate with environmental and biology teams to ensure reactor designs support biological performance
Mentor interns and junior engineers as the team grows

Required

Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
4+ years of experience in mechanical system design, preferably hardware-focused
Strong proficiency in CAD (SolidWorks, Fusion 360, or equivalent)
Solid understanding of fluid mechanics, structural mechanics, and material selection
Experience taking systems from concept → prototype → field deployment
Comfortable working in ambiguous, fast-moving startup environments
Strong ownership mindset and ability to lead without heavy process overhead

Preferred

Experience with P&IDs, filtration systems, wastewater treatment, or bioreactors
Background in containerized systems, infrastructure hardware, or climate tech
FEA and/or CFD experience for validation and optimization
Familiarity with solar mounting systems, outdoor-rated hardware, or ruggedized designs
Prior experience in field engineering or deployments
Interest in early-stage startups and mission-driven technology
