SIMCO, LLC is part of the nation’s only repository for the disposal of nuclear waste known as Transuranic (TRU) waste. The Scientist will provide permitting technical and regulatory support to the WIPP Environmental Programs, maintaining positive relationships and ensuring compliance with various environmental regulations and permits.

Responsibilities

Develop, review, and/or support development of Class 1 and Class 2 RCRA Permit modifications; support development of respective meeting notices and presentations for Class 2 Permit Modification Requests (PMRs); address public comments on PMRs and support public hearings as needed
Performing compliance-related management assessments as needed to demonstrate implementation of Permit or hazardous waste regulatory requirements
Support development or review regulatory deliverables, support development of responses to NMED requests for information and perform regulatory required research as needed
Support Hazardous Waste Disposal Unit (HWDU) closure activities including but not limited to developing required closure notifications, closure documentation required by the WIPP Permit and closure related Permit modifications
Support development of NM Discharge Permit 831 Renewal Application
Perform Permit/RCRA screens. WIPP Permit/RCRA Screening Program ensures changes to WIPP facility plans and procedures comply with the RCRA Permit and hazardous waste regulations. This work includes reviewing Permit implementation procedures being revised or newly developed to ensure steps and/or attachments include applicable Permit related requirements
Maintain Permitting procedures
Other permitting or technical support as directed

Required

Bachelor's degree in engineering or science
Must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in limited circumstances

Preferred

Permitting experience
Familiarity with the WIPP Hazardous Waste Facility Permit
Previous WIPP experience
Knowledge of the RCRA regulations
Familiarity with the SIMCO management assessment program
Familiarity with the WIPP facility and organizational structure to be able to perform the required assessments and coordination functions
