Responsibilities

The Aviation Director is responsible for the coordination and administration of the aviation organization structure statewide
This position also serves as an advisor to the Deputy State Forester and Assistant Commissioner / State Forester on all aviation matters
The Aviation Director is responsible for managing, directing, and coordinating the flight operations and maintenance of a large and diverse aviation unit engaged in a variety of multiple mission flights including patrol, forest fire suppression, forest management, search and rescue, cargo delivery, photographic, and passenger flights using a wide variety of aircraft including single, twin, and heavy multi-engine fixed wing and rotor wing aircraft
Performs pilot in command duties as required to ensure completion of the missions assigned to the Aviation Division
Organizes, coordinates, and establishes an effective aviation training program for all pilots, mechanics, crewmembers and supervisors to ensure compliance with policies, regulations, and the needs of the organizations supported by the Aviation Division
This position supervises the Mountain, Piedmont, and Coastal Plain Assistant Chief Pilots, and the Aviation Maintenance Supervisor
The position reviews and develops policies, procedures and standards for the aviation program along with review of General Statutes and Administrative Code

Required

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma
A minimum of 2000 hours of flight time in a closely related type of aircraft and/or type of mission
A minimum of six years of related experience
Certification as a FAA commercial or airline transport pilot in airplanes and/or rotorcraft
Possession of a FAA Class II Medical Certificate

Preferred

Knowledge of planning and implementing an aviation program for the purpose of emergency response, focusing on wild land fire and integrated pest management
Ability to obtain an in-depth knowledge of the fire danger rating system, fire behavior, forest fire suppression strategy and tactics, and the Incident Command System (ICS) with respect to aviation support of wild land fire suppression
Skilled in staff supervision, budget management, and program management
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with representatives of stakeholder groups in other state agencies, other states, and federal agencies
Ability to supervise, plan (short and long range), assign and review the work of others
Certification as a flight instructor
Ratings in multiengine (land), instrument flying or others as designated
