Responsibilities

Oversee daily energy market activities, strategies, and reporting. Analyze Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) market conditions, GRE generation offers and instruct adjustments as required
Collaborate with Alliance for Cooperative Energy Services (ACES) and GRE stakeholders and support power trading and scheduling activities providing expertise on fuel availability, pricing, and generation costs
Coordinate with gas supplier for path of gas volumes for GRE with the least risk
Direct gas storage inventories for generation plants on the pipeline systems
Accurately and promptly manage nominations, trading, scheduling, contract compliance, and accounting activities
Manage balancing, monitoring and purchasing all fuel oil for peaking plants
Oversee that all trading activities are within the risk management policies and procedures tolerance levels
Ensure that gas related decisions minimize pipeline penalties and overall fuel cost to GRE
Responsible for ensuring contracts are properly coordinating day-to-day natural gas and fuel oil purchasing decisions, transportation scheduling and transportation imbalance of natural gas and fuel oil deliveries for the GRE power plants
Provide guidance of Asset Performance Management (APM)’s Real Time and Day Ahead desk associated with GRE generation offers and strategies
Develop and maintain a strong professional working relationship with key vendors and suppliers
Provide routine and ad-hoc energy and natural gas market updates to generation personnel
Manage GRE generation fleet associated with the MISO tariff, Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) rules and regulations, North American Electric Reliability Commission (NERC) rules and regulations, and GRE’s internal risk management policies
Manage GRE’s power market structure, recent changes in tariff and/or other MISO related rules as well as GRE’s generation fleet characteristics and ensuring accuracies of inputs to ACES for generation offers
Responsible for establishing Power Cost Adjustment (PCA) estimate on all peaking plants costs the first day of the month
Establish and monitor fuel budget to support the annual GRE budget. Provide status updates as requested/required
Manage and oversee the annual combustion turbine fuel budgets in collaboration with finance and ACES
Manage communication and information exchange between GRE and MISO Independent Market Monitor (IMM) related to GRE market activities to ensure market optimization of GRE’s generation fleet are realized while staying within the (IMM) limits
Manage access and utilization of MISO Open Access Same-time Information System (OASIS) customer tool and IMM Portal
Manage baseload dispatch procedures to optimize the units during low Locational Marginal Pricing (LMP)
Manage and oversee the accurate and timely submission of required compliance bid strategy to ACES to enhance offerings to MISO
Analyze, research, and communicate changes in ACEs offers and requirements for GRE resources to internal staff and management. (E)
Manage risk and optionality value (rewards) of controlling certain assets and uses physical commodity, transportation and storage assets, and financial tools (such as futures, swaps, and options) to optimize these assets
Manage communication and information for disputes or alternative dispute resolution with MISO and/or IMM
Represent GRE’s fuel procurement perspective in committees and advisory groups of generation-related industry and regulatory organizations such as the Midwest ISO and IMM
Assist in the development of policies and procedures to comply with MISO rules and business practices related to the implementation of generation offers including MISO Market Monitor request and NAESB gas -electric harmonization. Monitor MISO policy related to distributed generation

Required

Knowledge typically acquired through a bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, engineering or equivalent
7+ years' experience in the electric utility or natural gas business
Strong working knowledge of natural gas, oil and energy markets
