Staff Accountant

Howden is a global insurance broker that is expanding its US retail platform and seeking a motivated Staff Accountant to join their Finance team. This role involves core accounting processes, financial reporting, and collaboration with finance leadership to support day-to-day operations and continuous improvement initiatives.

Responsibilities

Prepare and post journal entries accurately and on schedule
Perform monthly general ledger account reconciliations and investigate variances
Proactively review the trial balance, identify unusual activity, and recommend adjustments or accruals as needed
Assist with month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes
Support accounting for intercompany transactions, including foreign currency considerations, with guidance from senior team members
Process vendor invoices, employee reimbursements, and corporate credit card transactions
Review T&E submissions for accuracy and compliance with company policies
Ensure timely resolution of AP or expense-related issues by coordinating with internal teams
Maintain organized AP records and support process improvements
Extract data from financial systems to prepare recurring and ad-hoc reports for senior management and executives
Assist in preparing schedules, supporting documentation, and analyses for internal and external reporting
Support audit requests by gathering documentation and ensuring completeness and accuracy
Learn and adapt to evolving system integrations and new financial tools currently being implemented
Help document processes and identify opportunities to improve efficiency and accuracy
Maintain a strong understanding of the general ledger structure and financial reporting workflows
Work closely with finance leadership, FP&A, and operational teams to support business needs
Take ownership of assigned responsibilities and follow through to completion
Demonstrate strong communication skills and a commitment to high-quality work
Contribute to a positive, collaborative, and solutions-oriented team environment

Required

Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
3-5 years of accounting experience (internships or AP/GL experience a plus)
Foundational knowledge of US GAAP, including key areas such as: Revenue recognition, Lease accounting, Accruals and expense recognition
Interest in learning accounting topics specific to the insurance brokerage industry, including: Premiums, commissions, and contingent revenue, Trust account activity, Policy‑related timing differences
Exposure to or willingness to learn intercompany accounting, including: Transactions with domestic and international affiliates, Foreign currency (FX) impacts
Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel (VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, pivot tables, basic formulas)
Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and organizational skills
Ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize effectively, and meet deadlines
Eagerness to learn, take direction, and grow within the Finance function
Legally authorized to work in the US

Preferred

Insurance industry experience is valuable but not required
Familiarity with general ledger systems; experience with Oracle/Hyperion is a plus but not required
