Responsibilities

Drive the long-term technical roadmap for core backend systems, ensuring alignment with overall product and business goals (e.g., high availability, efficiency, and speed to market)

Lead the design and implementation of highly scalable, distributed, and fault-tolerant architectures across multiple teams, leveraging cloud-native patterns on AWS

Act as the primary technical authority and decision-maker on large, cross-functional projects, unblocking teams and accelerating development timelines

Champion technical consistency, identifying and solving complex technical challenges that span multiple engineering teams

Mentor and coach Staff and Senior Engineers, fostering a culture of technical excellence, continuous learning, and ownership

Conduct complex code and design reviews, providing constructive and insightful feedback that raises the quality bar across the organization

Establish and champion engineering best practices, including code standards, security patterns, agentic coding rules and workflows, testing methodologies, and robust deployment pipelines

Drive initiatives to improve engineering productivity and the developer experience, particularly as we scale production deployments across various regions and compliance boundaries

Collaborate with Engineering Directors and Product Managers to translate high-level requirements into robust technical designs and ensure technical efforts align with the overarching strategic plan

Actively participate in the Shape Up framework, providing deep technical context for project scoping and execution planning

Identify and mitigate technical risks proactively, ensuring the reliability, performance, and security of all backend services, especially concerning high-volume communication and AI workflows

Ensure that individual team projects align with the overarching architectural strategy and contribute to a unified, scalable platform

Required

12+ years of professional software development experience, with a heavy emphasis on backend systems

Proven experience as a Principal Engineer, Staff Engineer, or equivalent role with demonstrated technical leadership and cross-team architectural guidance

Deep expertise in designing and operating large-scale, distributed systems and microservices architecture

Expert-level proficiency in Golang (Go) for high-volume, production-ready systems

Strong hands-on experience designing and building solutions on AWS (e.g., EC2, S3, RDS, Lambda, EKS, DynamoDB)

Extensive experience designing efficient database schemas with relational and NoSQL databases (e.g., PostgreSQL, Cassandra, Redis)

Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical ideas to both technical and non-technical audiences

Preferred

A track record of driving significant, company-wide technical change and adoption

Prior experience in a high-growth or hyper-scale environment, particularly in VoIP or real-time data processing

Experience with real-time data processing, streaming technologies, and messaging systems in an AWS environment

Familiarity with the Shape Up project management methodology

Experience designing and building autonomous or semi-autonomous software agents and AI-driven workflows (LLMs, prompt engineering, agentic development)

Advanced degree in Computer Science or a related field
