Responsibilities
Collaborate closely with business analysts, business owners, solution architects, technical leads, developers, and QA teams to fully understand functional requirements, system behavior, scalability, and usability needs
Partner with Business Analysts to analyze existing business processes and systems, translating them into effective, user-friendly interface designs
Participate in requirements-gathering sessions, Joint Application Modeling (JAM) sessions, workshops, and brainstorming meetings to identify usability needs, user pain points, and design opportunities
Analyze current user workflows, journeys, and interactions to identify usability issues and recommend visual and functional improvements
Lead the overall visual design, interaction design, and usability strategy for assigned applications
Provide expertise and guidance on UI/UX best practices, design patterns, screen layouts, and usability testing methodologies
Act as a strong advocate for the end user by continuously improving the usability, accessibility, and overall experience of delivered solutions within project constraints
Create low-fidelity sketches, wireframes, and high-fidelity mockups based on business requirements and user stories
Develop interactive, high-fidelity prototypes when feasible to validate design concepts and user interactions
Ensure all designs comply with State of Michigan (SOM) Look & Feel Standards and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) accessibility requirements
Review wireframes and designs with Business Analysts for business accuracy and with Technical Leads for technical feasibility prior to stakeholder presentations
Provide UI/UX guidance to development teams, including best practices, coding standards, accessibility compliance, and vulnerability remediation
Conduct usability testing to validate designs against UI/UX best practices and iterate designs based on feedback
Perform accessibility testing to ensure ADA compliance and advise development teams on remediation strategies
Create and facilitate usability testing sessions with end users and incorporate findings into design improvements
Serve as a liaison with the DTMB Center for Shared Solutions (CSS) eMichigan team to ensure alignment with enterprise standards
Qualification
Required
Experience using wireframing and prototyping tools such as Figma, Sketch, or equivalent tools
Strong experience working with design systems and reusable UI components
Experience leading user workshops, design reviews, and facilitated working sessions
Familiarity with information architecture, user flows, and interaction design principles
Experience applying accessibility standards and UI/UX best practices, including ADA compliance
Knowledge of quantitative, results-driven design techniques such as A/B testing and usability metrics
Working knowledge of CSS preprocessors (SASS, LESS)
Strong collaboration and communication skills across technical and business teams
Preferred
Working knowledge of Java and/or .NET technologies
Experience working in Agile or hybrid SDLC environments
Prior experience designing solutions for government or public-sector applications
