Disability Supervisor- Initial Applications

NFL Player Benefits is looking for a Disability Supervisor (Initial Applications) to assist in supervising a team of Disability Benefit Coordinators handling initial disability claims. The role involves monitoring staff performance, implementing claims adjudication processes, and ensuring exceptional customer service for players and related parties.

Responsibilities

Oversee operational functional areas that include claim examination, systems configuration, audits, Initial application reviews, coordination of benefits, overpayment recovery, internal quality control, and exceptional customer service (internally and externally)
Manage the medical and/or mental disability cases of a complex nature, requiring a great understanding of medical and mental health terminology and conditions, as well as disability claim management practices
Implement and maintain efficient claims adjudication process that effectively utilizes technology to automate business processes and maximize the accuracy of claim approval, processing, and payments
Ensure appropriate consultative medical examinations are ordered where appropriate and sufficient medical evidence supports each claim, as well as ensures sufficient adjudication of claims
Assist the Disability Manager, Director of Operations, and Manager (Continuous Improvement) in improving disability benefits and claims processing and quality of claims/cases
Effectively monitor needs and requirements of players and related third parties to respond effectively to their issues and questions; ensure customer service goals are exceeded through successful implementation and compliance of claims business and strategic initiatives
Provide guidance and establish policies on disability claims; maintain awareness of any changes to legislation and regulations which pertain to claims benefit
Innovate areas for efficiency and quality assurance while monitoring and/or developing automated solutions
Recruit and hire qualified employees, while setting effective goals via yearly performance evaluations for all direct reports. Establishes trusting relationships throughout the office and where need be manages performance improvement plans (PIP) as needed
Respond urgently and thoroughly to escalated player situations
Partner with the Disability Manager to review initial applications and assign them to Benefit Coordinators for processing
Effectively track the timing of all disability cases to ensure the 45-day DOL threshold is met, while ensuring all parties are provided a status update every three business days
Prepare/review written decision rationales and letters to inform claimants of decisions made on their disability applications; and explain appeal rights
Maintain strong relationships with all key vendors that support claims operations, while holding vendors accountable for delivering their contractual commitments
As necessary, this position processes disability applications, and handles related issues, from players, participants, and related parties. Answer questions and resolve complex, escalated issues
Attend/participate Disability Initial Claims Committee (DICC) meetings
Efficiently supervise staff and deploy resources to accomplish NFLPB goals
Proactively ensure employees complete their tasks as assigned in an accurate and timely manner
Ensure staff compliance with NFLPB and Plan policies and procedures
Oversee quality and quantity of work produced, ensuring employees are held accountable and expectations are consistently met
Develop staff through performance management, goal setting, training, and effective participant relations
Lead, by example, and demonstrate willingness to assist and improve team member service levels
Manage appropriate staff development and certification efforts

Required

Bachelor's Degree required
Two to five years' disability claims and benefits administration experience required
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook)

Preferred
