Design Engineer Summer Intern

GM Performance Power Units in Concord, NC is seeking a Design Engineer Intern to support our Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) team. You will support the team in creating engineering solutions that improve reliability and performance, while gaining hands-on experience in automotive powertrain design.

Responsibilities

Assist in creating 3D CAD models, assemblies, and component drawings
Apply basic design principles, design standards, and best practices
Support design reviews, documentation, and team discussions
Learn to incorporate design for manufacturing and assembly considerations
Work with senior engineers to understand component analysis and optimization
Contribute to project tasks while learning about powertrain systems and components
Collaborate with team members and other departments to support production and design activities
Other duties as assigned

Required

Currently pursuing a degree in Mechanical, Automotive, or Design Engineering or a related field
Basic understanding of CAD software (preferably NX) and interest in learning advanced design tools
Experience working on a powertrain through FSAE or coursework
Strong communication and interpersonal abilities
Collaboration: Works effectively with internal teams and external partners
Adaptability: Responds effectively to evolving business needs and opportunities
Growth mindset
Strong problem-solving skills and a desire to learn in a fast-paced engineering environment
Ability to manage multiple projects independently
Ability to stand, walk, and move in diverse operational environments, including race shops, arenas, and commercial facilities
Comfortable working in variable environmental conditions, including loud, high-traffic, or high-pressure environments
