Senior Epidemiologist
The Kansas Department of Health and Environment is seeking a Senior Epidemiologist to provide scientific and epidemiological support to the Blood Lead Surveillance program. The role involves data management, conducting epidemiologic studies, and collaborating with various partners to enhance public health initiatives.

Responsibilities
Compile, clean, store and analyze specific data sets related to blood lead on a regular basis
Work closely with program staff to ensure accuracy and completeness of data
Follow up with internal and external partners to correct and complete data
Monitor the data quality and apply continuous quality improvement techniques to increase the quality and availability of blood lead data compiled in various formats
Complete necessary training to understand how to manipulate and format data in a way that is readily consumed
Develop protocols for data management
Works with and as an extension of a team of epidemiologists in the Bureau of Epidemiology and Public Health Informatics (BEPHI)
Conducting epidemiologic studies to support planning and evaluation of the lead poisoning prevention programs
Responsibilities include overseeing the utilization of the blood lead surveillance database for conducting advanced analytical work and for planning and conducting future epidemiologic studies to assess the impact of lead poisoning in Kansas
Conduct epidemiologic investigation (e.g., identifies population of interest, creates case definition, identifies investigation timeframe, considers and accounts for sources of bias and confounders)
Collaborate with informaticians to collect, parse, prepare, and provision data to design and maintain databases and tools
Additionally, provides epidemiological support to the Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) monitoring program which spans across both the Division of Public Health and the Division of Environment
Helps to investigate reports of HAB-related illnesses in humans and animals and provides data analysis of lake sampling results
Also helps design study instruments for collecting data on HAB-related illnesses
Also provides analytical support for non-infectious disease cluster investigations
Qualification
Required
MPH/MS degree
Valid Driver's License - Incumbent is required to have and maintain a valid driver's license when operating a state vehicle, a private vehicle, or a rental vehicle for the benefit of the State
5 or more years of work at a local, state, or federal public health agency as an applied epidemiologist
Kansas Tax Clearance Certificate: A valid Kansas Tax Clearance Certificate is a condition of employment for all employees of the State of Kansas
Preferred
MPH/MS in Epidemiology
PhD in Epidemiology
Scientific report writing
Creating fact sheets, data briefs, etc
Plan and conduct epidemiological studies
Knowledge of program evaluation methods and data analysis
Presenting scientific information to diverse audiences
Epidemiological data analysis using SAS or R
Proofreading, editing, attention to detail
