Software Development Engineer (contract)
Microsoft is seeking a Software Development Engineer to join a team responsible for building and maintaining the foundational infrastructure for device driver development across the Windows ecosystem. This role involves tackling complex technical challenges, collaborating with internal teams and external partners, and ensuring the robustness and security of the Windows driver ecosystem.

Responsibilities
Triage bugs and support requests related to platform issues, developer kits, and hardware compatibility
Debug complex driver and kernel-mode issues across diverse hardware stacks
Perform root cause analysis on system-level problems and compatibility challenges
Develop and update code to resolve identified issues and improve platform reliability
Test and validate updates to platform components and developer kits before release
Investigate security vulnerabilities and identify patterns to strengthen the driver ecosystem
Collaborate with Windows engineering teams and hardware partners to deliver certifiable drivers
Support quarterly updates to developer and certification kits and monthly platform releases
Contribute to AI-driven engineering initiatives by creating and integrating AI agents across development and validation processes
Validate and ship next-generation driver platform components to improve security and reliability
Qualification
Required
Three to five years of driver development experience
Three to five years of kernel mode debugging experience
Three to five years of C/C++ development experience
Experience with driver stacks such as network, filesystems, or other device stacks is highly valued
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent practical experience
Ability to meet security screening requirements
C/C++ programming for systems-level development
Driver development and kernel-mode programming
Kernel debugging techniques and tools
Complex systems debugging and troubleshooting
Problem-solving and root cause analysis
Understanding of plug and play architecture
Knowledge of driver installation and lifecycle management
Familiarity with verification tools, both static and runtime
Security research and vulnerability assessment
Collaboration with cross-functional teams and external partners
Preferred
Background in native systems programming is preferred
Previous work with verification or certification tools is beneficial
