ENGINEER STRUCTURAL 2
Newport News Shipbuilding is the largest industrial employer in Virginia and specializes in building U.S. Navy nuclear aircraft carriers and submarines. They are seeking an Engineer Structural 2 to develop future submarines, oversee projects, and provide guidance to junior engineers while ensuring structural integrity and system integration.

Responsibilities
Analyze, research, and develop structurally engineered products, typically involving metallic materials, for new ship construction or ship alterations for commissioned vessels
Specific structural applications may contain composite materials
Techniques include classical, closed-form solutions and finite element methods to solve static, dynamic, transient and shock loading scenarios
Additional analyses consist of damage tolerance, fatigue and thermal analysis
Resulting analytical requirements include allowed stress levels, structural displacement, structural stability, and factors of safety
Interfacing with other engineering disciplines is required to ensure whole-ship system integration as well as ensuring products meet survivability requirements
Common tools used are Femap/NASTRAN, Abaqus CAE, Microsoft Office suite, AutoCAD, Inventor, and Siemens PLM suite
Analyzes, researches and develops structural engineering specifications involving metals, non-metallic or composite structural materials for product design, or operation of product to include structures, mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and electronics, power plant, armament, heating and ventilating, equipment and maintenance designs
Analyzes damage tolerance, durability, design allowables and structural modeling
Specific structural engineering specialties may include dynamics and loads, stability and stress fatigue and thermal analysis
Qualification
Required
Bachelor's Degree and 2 years of relevant exempt experience
Master's Degree and 0 year of relevant professional experience
Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program
Preferred
Knowledge of submarine requirements in engineering and design of deck structures, foundations, and platform arrangements
The ability to apply advanced technical principles, theories, and concepts, in the field of structural design and analysis is expected with limited supervision
Experience in working in a collaborative environment integrating the many ship systems at the structural interfaces, with teams of engineers and designers of varying disciplines
Strong communication and technical writing skills
A good knowledge and utilization of the following software/applications: FEMAP, Abaqus, Teamcenter, Hypermesh, and MatLab
Ability to learn operate older government provided software, i.e. FORTRAN
The ability to acquire a SECRET clearance
