Transport Maint Crew Chief - Boerne

The Texas Department of Transportation is hiring a Transportation Maintenance Crew Chief to guide a dedicated team in Boerne. In this role, you'll support the administration of the maintenance section, lead daily operations, train and mentor crew members, and respond during emergencies to ensure the safety of roadways.

Government Administration

Responsibilities

Assists in administration of the maintenance section
Estimates and gathers materials and equipment necessary to complete assignments
Inspects roads while en route to and from job site and reports problems to supervisors
Maintains records on materials and equipment used and employee time sheets
Operates light and heavy equipment
Oversees the work of designated maintenance inspectors and sign technicians
Performs some maintenance and repair on equipment and trains crew members on the use of equipment
Serves as a lead worker by scheduling daily work assignments; serving as a resource for complex questions and troubleshooting of problems; presenting operational updates to the supervisor; providing input on team members’ career conversations; and approving leave requests to ensure operational coverage
Performs other job responsibilities as assigned

Required

High School Grad or Equivalent in general education
5 years experience in roadway maintenance related work. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis
Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle
Must have a Class 'A' Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with an 'N' endorsement from date of application
Methods, procedures, equipment, and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance work
The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices
Methods and procedures involving storage & transport of hazardous materials
Design, testing and quality control of materials used in the construction and maintenance of highways and related structures
Applicable surveying procedures, standards, and instruments
Incident management procedures
Inventory/stock control procedures
Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines, and specification codes
Maintenance contract inspection procedures
Operating light and heavy highway equipment
Performing calculations to include material and labor estimates, expenses, technical survey data and engineering calculations
Leading, assigning, reviewing, and monitoring the work of others
Coordinating labor, materials, and equipment
Prioritizing and organizing work assignments
Interpreting applicable information
Training in a classroom, office, or field environment
Using applicable hand and power tools, equipment, and mechanical devices of the trade
Maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others
Maintaining a safe working environment
Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing

Climbing - ascending/descending ladders, stairs, scaffoldings, ramps, etc
Balancing-walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling
Stooping-bending body downward and forward by bending spine at waist
Kneeling-bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee(s)
Crouching-bending body downward and forward by bending leg(s) and spine
Crawling-moving about on hands and knees or hands and feet
Standing-prolonged periods of time
Walking-moving on foot to accomplish tasks: long distance/from one work site to another
Grasping-applying pressure to an object with fingers and palm

Close Visual Acuity-work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading
Close Visual Acuity-work includes visual inspection of small defects/parts
Close Visual Acuity-using measurement devices; and assembly or fabrication parts
Visual Acuity-operate machines, such as drill presses, power saws, and mills
Visual Acuity-operate motor vehicles and heavy equipment
Visual Acuity-determine work quality/make general observations of facilities/structures
This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre-employment physical
Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions. This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing
Must be able to report for duty within 45 minutes of notification on a 24-hour basis to respond to emergency situations
