Applications Engineering Mgr

The Applications Engineering Manager will lead the design, development, and maintenance of the Guidewire InsuranceSuite platform while managing a team of engineers to ensure high-quality software delivery and adherence to industry standards.
Responsibilities
Provides hands-on technical leadership across Guidewire applications including configuration, integrations, GOSU, Java, XML, and REST/SOAP service
Leads architecture and solution design for scalable, reliable implementations
Owns the Guidewire technical roadmap, ensuring alignment with business and enterprise standards
Reviews designs, code, and integrations for quality, performance, and security
Drives engineering excellence through coding standards, testing practices, CI/CD improvements, and observability
Serves as the top escalation point for complex production issues and evaluates new technologies, cloud capabilities, and platform upgrades to improve performance and future readiness
Oversees the successful delivery of Guidewire features, integrations, and enhancements across ClaimCenter, PolicyCenter, and BillingCenter
Ensures engineering work meets functional requirements, P&C insurance industry standards, regulatory expectations, and internal quality benchmarks
Partners with cross-functional teams—Product Managers, Functional Analysts, QA, Architecture, SMEs—to turn business requirements into actionable technical plans
Identifies and resolves technical risks early in the development cycle and ensures system stability and data integrity across all platform modules
Monitors engineering metrics such as velocity, lead time, defect trends, code quality, and DORA metrics to improve consistency and predictability
Manages the planning, execution, and delivery of multiple software projects in an Agile/Scrum/SAFe environment
Manages scope, timelines, risks, dependencies, and overall roadmap execution for the Guidewire domain
Facilitates clear communication across stakeholders and provides timely updates on progress, challenges, and solution paths
Partners with product leadership to create realistic release plans, prioritize work, and make data-driven decisions
Ensures all projects adhere to enterprise standards for architecture, security, data, and infrastructure
Recruits, selects, and trains employees to meet department objectives
Establishes achievable performance goals, expectations and monitors those results
Provides performance feedback, coaching, and corrective action, as needed
Job may require fulfilling other incidental or related duties as assigned, assisting and training others, and performing duties of higher rated positions from time to time for developmental purposes
Qualification
Required
BA/BS in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field
5+ years of hands-on software development experience, specifically with the Guidewire platform in a technical leadership or manager role (Engineering Manager, Team Lead, Solutions Architect, or similar)
3+ years of experience in a leadership or managerial role managing AGILE engineering teams, SAFe software delivery, applying leadership best practices and driving development on the roadmap
5+ years of strong experience in the Property & Casualty (P&C) insurance industry, including business processes, integrations, and domain models. Experience with Guidewire platform and related technologies (e.g., Guidewire PolicyCenter, Guidewire ClaimCenter)
Preferred
Some experience with Jutro or modernizing Guidewire UI
Some experience leading cloud migration or modernization initiatives
Expert-level proficiency in GOSU, Guidewire configuration, PCF screens, rules, and the Guidewire data model
Strong background in Java/J2EE, object-oriented design, data structures, and enterprise integration patterns
Experience with distributed systems, microservices, REST APIs, message queues, and cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP)
Experience with relational and NoSQL databases, complex querying, and database performance tuning
Strong understanding of CI/CD pipelines, DevOps automation, and tools like Git, Jenkins, BitBucket, GitLab, or similar
Familiarity with containerization, monitoring, logging, and system observability
Ability to troubleshoot large-scale issues across platform modules, integrations, and infrastructure
Guidewire Certifications (Config/Integration/Cloud)
Cloud certifications (AWS/Azure)
