Vehicle Mechanic

Kitsap Transit has been operating since 1983 and has grown substantially. They are seeking a Vehicle Mechanic to perform journey-level diagnostic repair and maintenance work on diesel transit buses and gasoline vans and trucks, including inspecting, diagnosing, and repairing mechanical defects.

Responsibilities

Inspect, diagnose and repair mechanical defects in diesel and gasoline powered buses and vehicles, including engines, transmissions, electrical, hydraulic, and heating/air conditioning systems
Diagnose and dismantle, if necessary, to determine need for overhauls on engines and transmissions, generators or alternators
Overhaul wheel and master cylinders and align wheels
Repair pumps, lights, steering gears and other parts
Complete records of work performed, parts used and time worked
Road test vehicles to assist in making diagnosis and to check completed work
Provide emergency road service to disabled vehicles

Required

Four years diesel mechanic experience at journey-level, or completion of recognized mechanic apprenticeship program and two years of journey-level experience
Knowledge of technique and methods of overhauling and repairing diesel and gasoline powered equipment
Knowledge of materials, tools and equipment used in repair of diesel and gasoline powered equipment
Knowledge of safe working practices
Ability to tune-up gasoline and diesel engines
Ability to diagnose malfunctions and determine appropriate repairs
Ability to operate mechanical and electronic testing equipment and use mechanical hand tools
Ability to interpret wiring diagrams
Ability to follow written and oral instructions
Ability to work cooperatively with others
Must possess and maintain a Class B Washington State commercial driver's license with a passenger endorsement and air brake restriction removed
Must maintain a good driving record throughout employment
Must obtain a Puget Sound Naval Shipyard security clearance
Ability to operate transit vehicles and equipment
Ability to perform work in a standing position 60% of the time with walking estimated at 35% of the shift
Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds without assistance
Ability to climb ladders up to 12 feet
Frequent balancing, stooping, reaching, grasping, fingering actions are required

Preferred

Transit or school bus maintenance experience is highly desirable

A general leave accrual rate of: 6.7693 hours per pay period and 11 holidays.
ASE Certification Pay – Additional $0.25 per hour, for each individual certificate – Up to a maximum of two dollars ($2.00) per hour.
The employee will receive a free Kitsap Transit transportation pass.
