R&D Optical Test Engineer
Xscape Photonics is redefining how the world moves and processes information—at the speed of light. The Optical Test Engineer will support optical and electrical testing of next-generation photonic systems, ensuring the accuracy and scalability of performance measurements.
Responsibilities
Perform optical and electrical characterization of photonic components and modules, including measurements of power, wavelength, and stability
Operate and maintain laboratory equipment such as optical spectrum analyzers, power meters, photodiode detectors, oscilloscopes, and current/voltage sources
Follow established test procedures to ensure consistency and reliability across measurements
Record, organize, and analyze data to identify trends or anomalies in device performance
Develop and maintain automated measurement scripts using Python, LabVIEW, or similar tools to improve test throughput and reproducibility
Collect and analyze test data using spreadsheets, scripts, or database tools
Maintain structured data pipelines and ensure test data integrity through consistent documentation and version control
Drive automation frameworks that allow scaling from single-module testing to dozens or hundreds of units, integrating dashboards and reporting tools for real-time monitoring
Implement scalable analysis frameworks to handle large datasets from high-volume testing and feed into reliability models and product qualification reports
Assemble and align optical and electrical test setups, including fixtures, fiber alignment systems, and electrical interconnects
Ensure optical and mechanical stability for repeatable and accurate measurements
Troubleshoot setup issues and propose improvements to enhance measurement precision and efficiency
Conduct controlled tests under varying temperature, bias, or operating conditions to verify device and system behavior
Support test campaigns aimed at characterizing design revisions or validating new configurations
Contribute to reporting of test results, identifying trends, and summarizing findings for engineering and quality teams
Document setup configurations, test parameters, and results thoroughly
Collaborate with photonics, electronics, and packaging engineers to refine test methods and ensure data quality
Communicate test results clearly and contribute to design feedback loops
Help define and scale up test methods for future production or qualification workflows
Support the scaling of test workflows from early R&D to pilot and production environments
Partner with operations, manufacturing, and NPI teams to transition test methods from R&D scale to pilot and production-scale environments
Qualification
Required
B.S. or M.S. in Optical Engineering, Physics, Electrical Engineering
Proficiency with optical and electronic measurement tools and environmental testing equipment
Proficiency in scripting languages (Python preferred) for instrument automation and data analysis
Strong attention to detail and a methodical approach to test execution and documentation
Effective communication and teamwork skills in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary setting
Preferred
Experience in scaling test workflows from R&D to higher-volume module or system testing environments is highly desirable
